EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Bucknell University men's water polo team overcame a late 8-7 deficit against a game Mount St. Mary's squad, scoring four unanswered goals over the final 5:13 to take a 12-8 win and improve to 11-8 overall and 8-3 in conference games this season.
A series of runs defined Saturday's game in Emmitsburg. After a 2-2 first quarter, with goals by Aleksa Stefanovic and Matt Ryckman, the Bison went on to score five of the next six goals over the next 12 minutes.
The Mount responded to a goal by Andu Vlasceanu to open the second and tie the game at three, before the Bison scored four straight goals to close the second quarter. Stefanovic capped off the run with a goal at the 4:27 mark of the third as the Bison held MSM off the score sheet for nearly ten minutes.
However, The Mount responded to close the third, blanking the Bison after Stefanovic's goal and scoring five straight unanswered goals of its own, capped off by the go-ahead goal from distance at the 7:17 mark to take an 8-7 lead.
Bucknell responded courtesy of Hasan Mogultay, who scored two quick goals at the 5:13 and 4:38 mark to give Bucknell the lead for good. Josh Yardley, Stefanovic, and Shay Gillearn added insurance goals as Bucknell secured another MAWPC win on the road and closed the game with a 5-0 scoring run.
Both Stefanovic and Mogultay scored three times in the win, while Yardley scored multiple goals for the first time this season.
Bucknell will have a quick turnaround, hosting Navy on Sunday in another critical MAWPC matchup at Kinney Natatorium at noon.
