UPDATE: Due to impending weather conditions, Bucknell and North Carolina will now play just a single match at noon on Sunday, rather than the originally scheduled doubleheader.
HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Bucknell men's tennis team made its 2022 debut on Friday against a tough James Madison squad, and the Dukes prevailed by a 7-0 count. The highlight of the day for the Bison was a victory at No. 2 doubles from Tim Zelikovsky and Carlos Carvalho.
Zelikovsky and Carvalho posted a 6-4 win over William Karpinski and Mathieu Josserand at No. 2, but the Dukes won on Courts 1 and 3 to take the doubles point.
Zelikovsky won his team-leading fifth doubles match of the season, including fall competitions, while the freshman Carvalho notched his first career doubles victory.
James Madison won all six singles matches in straight sets. The closest set came from Zelikovsky, who extended Youssef Sadek to 7-5 in the second.
The Bison lined up with Winchester, Va., native Nick Mueller in the No. 1 spot, followed by Michael Owen, Zelikovsky, Ink Chen, Nicolas Grunig, and Carvalho. Chen, who returned to the team after sitting out last season, saw his first action since 2019-20.
Bucknell is back in action on Sunday at No. 13 North Carolina. The Bison and Tar Heels will play at noon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill.
