JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Matt Hoyt scored with 40 seconds left in the second overtime period to lift host Saint Peter's to a 2-1 win over Bucknell on Saturday afternoon at Jaroschak Field. Sophomore Jordan Miller tallied his first collegiate goal to open the scoring in the first half, but the Peacocks drew level with a second-half penalty kick and won it in the final minute of extra time.
The Bison, who are in the midst of a four-game away stretch to start the season, fell to 0-3, while Saint Peter's improved to 1-2.
Both sides had good chances in the early going, with the Bison generating some looks at goal off long throw-ins by Colin Eifert. In the eighth minute he picked out fellow center back Gabe Dahlin, whose header just flashed wide. Four minutes later, Matt Ellis hit the left post for Saint Peter's, and a follow-up attempt went over the bar.
Bennett Schwartz made one of his better saves of the day when he had the near post covered on Hoyt's attempt at the 20-minute mark. That stop kept the game scoreless, but the Bison broke through about 15 minutes later after some good work by a pair of substitutes.
Midfielder Brennan Gac, working back defensively in his own half, drove a bouncing ball over the top of the Peacocks' back line, and Miller was able to collect and finish the breakaway for a 1-0 Bison lead.
Ten minutes into the second half the Bison were trying to clear a corner kick at the top edge of the area, but a Saint Peter's player was clipped with a high boot resulting in a penalty. Jamie Davis converted from the spot to even things at a goal apiece.
Ellis hit the woodwork again in the 58th minute, and in the 75th Bucknell captain Patrick O'Hara was denied at close range by goalkeeper Guillem Badenes Mecho.
Schwartz made a good stop on a turning shot from Marco Torino with three minutes to go in the second overtime, but the Peacocks cashed in on a counter a few minutes later. Davis made it happen with a burst down the right sideline. He centered a pass to Brian Carvalhoso, whose delivery was redirected home by Hoyt.
Saint Peter's finished with a 22-12 shot advantage, while both goalkeepers made four saves.
Bucknell is back on the road next Friday at Mount St. Mary's at 7 p.m.
