Miller Scores Twice as Men’s Soccer Beats Mount St. Mary’s 2-1

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Red-hot sophomore Jordan Miller pocketed two more goals Friday night, the latter breaking a 1-1 tie in the 82nd minute to lift the Bucknell men's soccer team to a 2-1 road win over Mount St. Mary's in front of a large crowd at Waldrop Family Stadium.
The Bison picked up their first win in four tries this season and will carry some momentum into Sunday's home opener against St. Bonaventure.
Miller, a sophomore striker from Jamaica, has given the Bison a big lift off the bench over the last week. He picked up his first collegiate goal against Saint Peter's last Saturday, and then he burned Mount St. Mary's with a brace on Friday night.
After co-captains Patrick O'Hara and Alex Clarke barely missed on good looks at goal in the first 18 minutes, Miller opened the scoring in the 25th. Freshman center back Gabe Dahlin played a looping ball over the defense, and Miller fought off two defenders while dealing with the high bouncing ball. Miller chipped the ball over goalkeeper Adam Siviter and then tapped it over the line for a 1-0 lead.
Bucknell's lead lasted only about four minutes, however. Jesus Salazar threaded a pass through a gap in the Bison back line to Alek Wroblewski, who took the ball to the left of the cage and slipped in a shot from a sharp angle.
Miller was a menace to the Mountaineers all night, and he nearly gave the Bison the lead with 90 seconds left in the half but shot wide of goal after Chris Masur waltzed through the box. Then five minutes into the second half Miller ran onto another long ball and was chopped down by Siviter outside the area, resulting in a yellow card for the Mount keeper.
O'Hara maneuvered around two defenders to find shooting space in the 65th minute, but he pulled his attempt just wide left. With just over 10 minutes remaining, Miller got a foot on a ball from a seated position in a corner kick scrum, but the shot went right at Siviter.
But only three minutes later, Miller found that elusive go-ahead tally. The ball pinged around for a bit after a long throw-in from Colin Eifert, and Matthew Owusu side-flicked one into the box. Siviter came sliding out to smother it, but the ball leaked out and Miller was there to pop it home with just 8:12 showing on the clock.
The Bison managed the final eight minutes well and saw out the win. Bucknell finished with a 13-7 shot advantage and an 8-1 edge in corner kicks. Bennett Schwartz made one save for the Bison, while Siviter finished with two saves. Miller, who has scored all three of Bucknell's goals this season, led all players with four shot attempts.
After opening the season with four straight road games, the Bison open up the home slate on Sunday at 5 p.m. against St. Bonaventure.
