Women's Tennis Completes Day One of Bucknell Invitational

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women's tennis team advanced three to the Bucknell Invitational quarterfinals at first singles on Friday at the Varsity Tennis Courts.
Senior captain Daniela Bellini opened the day with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Niagara's Sofia Gonzalez. Her commanding win set the tone for her team, which totaled six singles victories and two doubles wins overall.
Bellini was joined in the first singles quarterfinals by sophomore Tyne Miller and freshman Whitney King. Miller edged Lafayette's Maureen McCormack in a hard-fought three sets, 7-6, 4-6, 10-8. King impressed in her collegiate debut, downing Niagara's Jaida Borg in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
In addition, three Bison reached the quarterfinals at second singles: junior Chloe Zilkha, sophomore Laurel Utterback and freshman Anna Lajos.
Zilkha moved forward in the bracket behind a 6-0, 6-1 win over Lafayette's Miranda Kawula. Utterback was equally impressive, dropping Saint Francis's Nagisa Miyake by a pair of 6-2 margins.
Lajos made quick work of Niagara's Madigan Humiston in her collegiate debut, dispatching her, 6-0, 6-2.
At first doubles, Bellini and King reached the quarterfinals by defeating Lafayette's Brooke Dann and Emma Menkowitz, 6-1. At second doubles, Utterback and Lajos teamed for a 6-1 victory over Niagara's Borg and Emma Shea.
Sophomore Kate Novak and freshman Caroline Marcus will also compete in the second doubles quarterfinals due to receiving a first-round bye.
The Bucknell Invitational continues tomorrow at the Varsity Tennis Courts. The day begins at 9 a.m. with first singles matches.
