CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Bucknell field hockey visited Harvard on Sunday afternoon and fell 4-1 at Berylson Family Field Hockey Field. Bison rookie Lily Neilson scored in the 43rd minute of action to cut into a 2-0 Harvard lead, but the Crimson added two more goals in the final quarter to put a stop to the comeback.
Bucknell moved to 6-3 (2-0 PL) with the loss, and Harvard improved to 7-1 (1-0 Ivy League). The Crimson led 15-9 in shots, putting 10 on target. Bucknell saw all five penalty corners in the contest, including two in the fourth quarter.
The Crimson were on the board 9:33 into the game when Emily Berlinghof shot from right in front of Bucknell goalkeeper Clara McCormick. The ball hit McCormick's pad but trickled in to make it a 1-0 game. Harvard struck again six minutes into the third quarter as Emily Guckian carried the ball from near midfield into the circle and scored unassisted to extend the deficit to 2-0.
The Bison finally made their way onto the board in the 43rd minute when Neilson converted on a penalty corner thanks to a Maddie Rehak assist. The pair combined for seven points this weekend as both scored in Saturday's win over Boston U. The goal was Neilson's Patriot League-leading ninth of the season, and Rehak now has five assists.
Bucknell entered the final quarter trailing 2-1, but Harvard added a third goal in the 49th minute and another in 60th. Bucknell posted five shots and saw two more penalty corner opportunities in the final 15 minutes.
Three Bison posted two shots each, and McCormick finished with four saves.
Up next, Bucknell plays a single game at American next weekend. The Bison visit the Eagles in Washington, D.C. for a Patriot League contest at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2. The Bison saw American three times last season and went 2-1 in those matchups, including a shootout win in the Patriot League semifinals and a 2-1 double-overtime victory during the regular season.
