Rayven Sample to Compete in 400 Preliminaries at Paralympic Games on Thursday Evening

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Rayven Sample will make his Paralympic debut in the 400 on Thursday evening at the National Stadium in Tokyo.

Sample will be one of two Americans in the field alongside Tanner Wright. His personal-best time of 50.29 ranks tenth in the field, with Ferreira dos Santos Petrúcio of Brazil holding the top mark of 47.87. Dos Santos claimed the silver medal in Rio in 2016 in the event, mounting a late charge in the final 100m.
Three athletes return to Tokyo after competing in the event in 2016. Dos Santos and Antonis Aresti of Cyprus each qualified for the final in 2016, while Alex Anjos of São Tomé and Principe narrowly missed qualifying for the final.
Eleven countries will be represented in the T47 400. Brazil leads the way with three entrants, followed by two from the United States. Canada, China, Cyprus, Dominican Republic, Japan, Malta, Morocco, São Tomé and Principe, and Sri Lanka also have one athlete each in the field.
Sample will compete in the first heat on Thursday in lane four, where he will line up directly next to Petrúcio in lane five. The native of Jamestown, N.Y. is the youngest competitor in the field, and the 19-year old is one of only two teenagers competing in the event.
The top three from each heat along with the next two fastest times will qualify for Saturday's final set for an 8 a.m. start.
