Mueller, Grunig Win Singles Matches on Day 1 of Binghamton Championship

RESULTS
VESTAL, N.Y. – Nick Mueller and Nicolas Grünig won first-round singles matches on Friday as play got underway at The Star Group Binghamton Championship.
The tournament format was altered to round-robin doubles matches in two flights, along with six bracketed singles flights.
Mueller is playing in the A Singles draw, and he improved to 7-0 on the season with a tight 7-6, 7-6 win over Michael Pawlowicz of the host Bearcats. Mueller won the first-set tiebreaker 10-8 and the second-set breaker 7-5 to advance to Saturday's semifinal round against Jack Selati of Colgate.
Grünig was a 6-2, 6-4 winner over Army's Daniel Zhou, and he will play Tom Owen of Buffalo on Saturday in the D Singles semifinals.
Carlos Carvalho and Per Astrom are also competing this weekend. Carvalho led Colgate's Mike Thomas 4-3 in the first set at C Singles but was forced to retire due to injury. Astrom lost his first-round match to Merrimack's Andre Singer.
Play resumes at 9 a.m. Saturday on the Binghamton campus.
