Bucknell Volleyball 2021 Schedule
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Head coach Tyler Hagstrom and the Bucknell volleyball team announced the 2021 schedule on Monday, previewing a slate of 25 matches this fall. In addition to 16 Patriot League matches, Bucknell will see nine non-conference opponents over three tournaments to begin the year and has eight total home matches at Davis Gym throughout the season.
It will be the first time Bucknell has seen non-league opponents since 2019 due to the COVID-19 public health threat. The Bison were 11-1 during tournaments in 2019 and collected a program-record 10 consecutive victories heading into conference play.
Bucknell begins this season at the Delaware State Invitational on Friday, Aug. 27 and will face St. Francis Brooklyn in the 2021 opener. The Bison played all three teams in attendance – Delaware State, St. Francis Brooklyn, and Saint Peter's – during the 2019 season and are 32-0 all-time against the trio.
The following weekend features a tournament at Penn where Bucknell will take on the Quakers, Canisius and Coppin State on Friday, Sept. 3 and Saturday, Sept. 4. The Quakers will be a familiar opponent for Hagstrom, who was 8-0 against the Ivy League foes during his four years as an assistant at Princeton. Meanwhile, Bucknell last faced Canisius and Coppin State in 2017 and 2016, respectively, and is 15-4 all-time against the two programs.
The team wraps up the non-conference schedule with a tournament at Cornell on Friday, Sept. 10 and Saturday, Sept. 11. Bucknell will challenge Niagara, UNLV and Cornell during the weekend for final preparation heading into the Patriot League schedule. The UNLV matchup will be the first in the history of the two programs, while the Niagara and Cornell series span several decades. Bucknell faced the Purple Eagles during the 1993 ECAC championship and holds a 7-3 edge in the series. Cornell has allowed just two wins to the Bison since 1984 and will be one of the biggest non-conference tests on the schedule.
Bucknell opens the Patriot League season at Army on Friday, Sept. 17 and heads to Holy Cross the following day as the league returns to a travel-partner style schedule. The Bison make their return to Davis Gym for the home opener against Lafayette on Friday, Sept. 24.
After playing three of their first four league matches on the road, the Bison have a four-game home stand to begin October and will play six of their eight matches in Davis during the month.
The regular season concludes on Friday, Nov. 12 at Loyola (Md.), and the Patriot League Tournament is schedule to begin on Tuesday, Nov. 16.
Bucknell is coming off a 1-3 spring season that was cut short as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hagstrom collected his first career victory with the Bison in a five-set match against American at home. It was Bucknell's first win over the Eagles since 1996.
Assistant coaches Jeremy Young and Erin Kretzschmar are entering their first seasons on the Bucknell staff, and Hagstrom added four newcomers to the roster. Bucknell is entering its 44th season of competition.
