With Young's assistance, the Bison developed into one of the finest programs in the Patriot League, tripling their wins total from seven in 2021 to 21 in 2024.Â
The 2024 team won 21 games with a program-best 13 victories in Patriot League competition and an overall .808 winning percentage. The squad set the program record for consecutive wins with 15.Â
Bucknell posted back-to-back 15-11 seasons in 2022 and 2023, making the Patriot League Tournament both times. The 2023 team went 11-5 in conference and finished in a tie for second place. The Bison hosted Navy in the Patriot League Quarterfinals for its first home tournament match since 2000.Â
Jordan Hardy benefited from Young's defensive insight, twice earning Patriot League Libero of the Year during the 2023 and 2024 seasons, becoming the first Bison to ever notch the honor. In 2023, Hardy also became the first Bison since Heidi Kamp in 2010 to obtain First Team All-Patriot League honors. Hardy repeated as First Team in 2024, becoming the first Bucknell player to do so since Jenna Henderson in 2006 and 2007.
Hardy was recognized outside the Patriot League, becoming the first player in program history to win ECAC Player of the Year and First Team All-ECAC honors, which she earned in 2024. In 2023 and 2024, she notched AVCA Honorable Mention All-Region laurels - the first Bison to accomplish the feat.Â
Young spent three years coaching collegiate volleyball before he arrived at Bucknell, making stops at both Southern Utah and North Carolina. Before entering the collegiate coaching ranks, Young worked as a middle school and high school guidance counselor.
Young spent the 2019 and 2020-21 seasons as an assistant coach at Southern Utah. In the role, Young focused on coaching ball control and the implementation/execution of team defense. He also oversaw team travel, meals, and the utilization of technology. The Thunderbirds put together a winning record in 2020, including an 8-6 Big Sky Conference mark and an 8-1 home record. They captured a 3-2 win over Montana State in the first round of the Big Sky Tournament.
Young served as a volunteer assistant coach with the Tar Heels during the 2018 season, contributing to all aspects of teaching and training. He also assisted with recruiting functions and player evaluation.
Young spent seven years coaching with the Triangle Volleyball Club in Morrisville, N.C., working with age groups 13-16. He coached athletes who committed to a host of Power Five schools and served as assistant director for the club from 2017 to 2018.
Young earned his bachelor's degree in history and religion in 2004 from Hillsdale and later a master's degree in education from North Carolina in 2010.
