Fresh off helping Princeton to three Ivy League championships in a four-year span, Tyler Hagstrom was tabbed as the new head coach of the Bucknell volleyball team on Feb. 4, 2020.
After five seasons, Hagstrom's record sits at 59-48 (.551) - the highest winning percentage in program history.Â
2024 witnessed one of the best campaigns in Bucknell volleyball history. The Orange & Blue went 21-5 for the best winning percentage (.808) in program history. The team went 13-3 for the most wins in conference play in program history. Hagstrom won Patriot League Coach of the Year.
The league awards was the greatest haul seen in Lewisburg. Five players made All-League Teams: Bri Frazilus, Jordan Hardy, Caleigh O'Connell, and Sidney Shaffer were First Team honorees while Tijana Kostic notched Second Team laurels. Hardy repeated as Patriot League Libero of the Year and won ECAC Defensive Player of the Year while receiving ECAC First Team honors. O'Connell became the first Patriot League Setter of the Year in program history.    Â
Bucknell repeated its 15-11 in 2023 but improved to 11-5 in conference competition - the most wins since 2003. The Bison hosted a conference tournament game for the first time since the 2003 season.Â
Jordan Hardy and Catherine Jamison received First Team All-Patriot League honors- the first Bison players since Heidi Kamp in 2010 to make the first team. Hardy became the first Bison to win Patriot League Libero of the Year. Sidney Shaffer won Patriot League Rookie of the Year and made Second Team All-Patriot League.Â
In 2022, Hagstrom led the Bison to its first Patriot League Tournament bid and the program's winningest regular season in over a decade. The Bison finished 15-11 overall and 8-8 in conference play. Bucknell won its last three conference games to clinch the bid. The season concluded with a tight loss to Loyola (Md.) in the Patriot League Quarterfinals.Â
Bri Frazilus was voted Patriot League Rookie of the Year, and the freshman was joined by sophomore libero Jordan Hardy on the Second Team All-Patriot League list.
Hagstrom led Bucknell to a 1-3 record during his first season, which was shortened due to the COVID-19 public health threat. Hagstrom and the Bison captured a win over perennial Patriot League power American – the team’s first since 1996.
As an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Princeton since 2016, Hagstrom helped the Tigers post an overall record of 73-27, an Ivy League mark of 45-9, and conference titles in 2016, 2017, and 2019. At Princeton, Hagstrom coached 21 All-Ivy League student-athletes, including two Player of the Year selections, a Rookie of the Year, and a Defensive Player of the Year.
Â
In his first season at Princeton in 2016, the Tigers finished 13-1 in the Ivy League and made their first NCAA Tournament appearance in nine years. A year later, Princeton made up a two-game deficit with five to play and then defeated Yale in a playoff to claim a second straight title.
Â
In 2018, Princeton finished 19-6, including wins over two Big Ten opponents in Maryland and Northwestern. But despite a 12-2 Ivy League record, the Tigers missed the title by one game and were listed as one of the final four teams left out for an NCAA at-large bid.
Â
The 2019 team went 17-8, including another win over Yale in an Ivy League playoff match, and fell to national power Penn State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Â
Before his tenure at Princeton, Hagstrom was an assistant coach at Grand Canyon, where he also went 3-1 in a brief stint as interim head coach. In addition to coordinating the Antelopes’ defense, Hagstrom headed up the team’s recruiting and scouting efforts.
Â
Hagstrom’s first coaching experience at the collegiate level came at UC Irvine in 2013 and 2014. There he worked primarily with the Anteaters’ blockers and backcourt defenders. He also managed the team’s travel and budget and was the program’s liaison with the admissions office.
Â
A 2007 graduate of California Baptist University, Hagstrom was a standout volleyball player himself. He was a libero on three NAIA national championship teams. He led the national tournament in digs on the way to the 2005 championship, and he broke the school’s single-season digs record.
Â
Hagstrom became the fifth head coach in the then-42-year history of the Bucknell volleyball program. He took over a team that finished 14-14 in 2019.
Â
Hagstrom lives in Lewisburg with his wife, Nina, and his three children, Dylan, Camila, and Lucas.Â
