Women's Swim & Dive Announces Addition of 11 Newcomers
6/9/2021 11:00:00 AM | Women's Swimming and Diving
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Head coach Dan Schinnerer announced on Wednesday that the Bucknell women's swimming & diving team will welcome 11 first years this fall.
Â
"We are very excited about this class," Schinnerer said. "The fact that it is a large and talented class is a testament to the great job our coaching staff and team did with recruiting despite the limitations the pandemic presented in the last year. This class will definitely help continue the great momentum our women's program has experienced over the last few years."
Â
The incoming student-athletes hail from six different states and one Canadian province: Connecticut (3), New York (3), Maryland, Massachusetts, Texas, Virginia and Ontario. They are projected to compete in a variety of disciplines, with butterfly being the most represented. The class also includes three divers.
Â
During the abbreviated 2020-21 campaign, the Bison went 3-0 and won their Patriot League Challenge Meet with American and Loyola (Md.). They are in the midst of a historically successful period. Over the course of the 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21 campaigns, they went a combined 21-2 (16-2 Patriot League) in dual meet competition, with their two losses coming to Patriot League champion Navy. They wrapped up their 2019-20 dual meet schedule with a sterling 10-1 (7-1 Patriot League) ledger. With their rivalry win over Lehigh, they reached the double digits in victories during a single season for the sixth time in program history. They last accomplished the feat in 1997-98.
Â
Bucknell lost nine to graduation following the 2020-21 season, including three-time All-Patriot League First Team honoree Maggie Wyngowski. Wyngowski, who was also tabbed as the Rookie of the 2018 Patriot League Championship Meet, graduated with school records in the 200 breaststroke (2:14.54), 200 IM (2:00.15) and 400 IM (4:15.26).
Â
The Bison will return three All-Patriot League selections for the 2021-22 campaign: Catherine Craig, Maddie Hartigan and Sabrina Vumbacco. Hartigan, a two-time All-Patriot League First Team honoree, enters her senior season with school standards in the 100 freestyle (50.01), 200 freestyle (1:48.22), 500 freestyle (4:46.48) and 1,000 freestyle (9:53.16). Vumbacco was also tabbed as the Rookie of the 2020 Patriot League Championship Meet, the most recent one contested due to the cancelation of the 2021 rendition.
