BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Bucknell swimmers Maddie Hartigan, Derek Knight and Maggie Wyngowski were voted to the 2021 Academic All-Patriot League Team, the league office announced Wednesday afternoon.
Both the men's and women's Academic All-Patriot League Teams featured 10 student-athletes. The Bison finished second to Navy in number of women's honorees and in total of overall selections. Hartigan, Knight and Wyngowski are all first-time Academic All-Patriot League Team members.
Hartigan won six out of the seven races she swam during the abbreviated 2020-21 season, bringing her career total of wins to 42. During the Bison's Patriot League Challenge Meet with American and Loyola (Md.), she won all four of her individual events and was a member of three runner-up relay teams; in addition, she set new school records in the 100 freestyle (50.01) and the 1,000 freestyle (9:53.16).
Hartigan, a junior psychology major, is a two-time All-Patriot League First Team selection and five-time Patriot League individual medalist. Beyond the school standards she set in 2020-21, she owns Bucknell records in the 200 freestyle (1:48.22) and 500 freestyle (4:46.48); she is also a member of 11 relay teams with program top-10 times, including the record-holding 800 freestyle relay team (7:18.40).
Knight, a junior cell biology & biochemistry major, boasts a perfect 4.0 grade point average. In the pool, he swam the 50 and 100 freestyle races at all five of Bucknell's 2020-21 meets, finishing as high as second.
Outside of the pool, Knight works at the Bucknell Teaching and Learning Center as a biology, chemistry and physics tutor. He has completed five different intensive research projects to date, including on "The Cardiac Repolarization Effects of COVID-19." Heavily involved in community service, he volunteers teaching swim lessons and organizes trips to local food banks as a Bucknell Athletics Community Service Representative. In addition, he is the co-president of Bucknell Advancing Communities, Educating, and Serving, a campus community service organization.
Wyngowski won eight races during the abbreviated 2020-21 season, bringing her career total of wins to 41. At Bucknell's Patriot League Challenge Meet with American and Loyola, she won the 400 IM and placed second in the 200 breaststroke and the 200 IM. Over the course of the season, she competed in a number of events she doesn't normally swim and continued her winning ways, most notably taking first in three 200 backstroke races and one 1,000 freestyle race.
A team captain and psychology and Italian studies double major, Wyngowski scored a combined 147 points at three career Patriot League Championships. The senior made all three possible All-Patriot League First Teams during her time as a Bison and captured five individual medals. She will graduate with Bucknell records in the 200 breaststroke (2:14.54), 200 IM (2:00.15) and 400 IM (4:15.26); notably, she is the first Bison to clear 2:15 in the 200 breaststroke, 2:02 in the 200 IM and 4:18 in the 400 IM. She was also a member of three medley relay teams with program top-10 times, including the record-holding 200 medley relay team (1:42.39).
