LEWISBURG, Pa. – Maddie Hartigan was selected as the Bison Athlete of the Week, which is presented by Mid-Penn Energy and Mid-Penn Engineering.
Hartigan was recognized for her role in the Bucknell women's swimming & diving team's first-place finish at its Patriot League Challenge Meet with American and Loyola (Md.). The junior won all four of her individual races and was a member of three runner-up relay teams over the course of the weekend; in addition, she set new school records in the 100 freestyle (50.01) and the 1,000 freestyle (9:53.16).
On Saturday, Hartigan came from behind to win the 100 freestyle in a photo finish, breaking the school record with a time of 50.22 in the process. She nearly broke her own school standard (4:46.48) en route to her victory in the 500 freestyle, clocking a time of 4:46.77 to lead a 1-2-3 Bison sweep.
On Sunday, Hartigan won the 200 freestyle (1:49.37) and the 1,650 freestyle (17:09.20). As the first leg of the Bison's second-place 400 freestyle relay team, she lowered the 100 freestyle record she set the day before to an impressive 50.01.
The 1,000 freestyle record Hartigan broke had been held by Kelly Pontecorvo (9:57.52) since 2013; Pontecorvo and Hartigan are the only two Bison to clear 10 minutes in this event. Previously, Hartigan was slotted second in school history in this event with a time of 10:00.52 set at the 2019 Bucknell Invitational. Entering the Patriot League Challenge Meet, Hartigan was also second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.77 clocked at the 2020 ECAC Championships.
This is Hartigan's fourth career Bison Athlete of the Week citation; she was previously honored twice as a first year and once as a sophomore. She is the first Bucknell swimmer to be honored with this award this school year.
