ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Bucknell University baseball team split two games at Navy on Saturday afternoon. Bucknell took the first game by a score of 4-2 in extra innings, before falling 6-5 in the second game of the day.
Game One: Bucknell 4, Navy 2.
An excellent outing by senior pitcher Brenden Tuttle along with yet another solid relief performance by Anthony Casciola limited the Mids to six hits over nine innings of the schedule seven-inning contest. The Bison scored three in the ninth to take a 4-1 lead, while Andrew Funovits managed to escape a jam in the bottom of the inning as Bucknell held on for the win.
Bucknell took a 1-0 lead in the third thanks to an RBI groundout by Jacob Corson that scored first year Anthony Sherwin. The Bison held onto that lead as starter Tuttle provided one of his best outings of the season, going five innings with eight strikeouts and no earned runs.
However, the Mids did find the tying run in the fifth as an error in the infield on a sac bunt allowed a Navy runner to score from third to tie the game.
Navy threatened to do even more damage as the bases were loaded with nobody out after the error. Bucknell managed its first out of the inning after a 3-5-2 play at home. Tuttle then escaped the rest of the inning without further incident, getting two big strikeouts to keep the score tied.
The game would remain tied as both pitching staffs locked in for the final two innings. Casciola replaced Tuttle in the sixth, and picked up where he left off after his excellent outing in Monday's win over Lehigh. Casciola pitched a clean sixth and seventh, as the game headed into extra innings.
Bucknell found its scoring touch in the ninth, as Caleb Broughton stepped up in a big way to single home Jacob Terwilliger, who was moved to second on a sac bunt by Kellerman. Peter Marren then delivered a two-RBI single up the middle that scored Broughton and Anthony Sherwin to extend the Bucknell lead to 4-1.
Navy managed to get one run back in the ninth on a sac fly, and looked poised to add more as the Mids loaded the bases with two outs in the frame. Andrew Funovits replaced Casciola with two outs, and after a walk on four straight pitches, managed to strike out the final batter looking to earn the save.
Marren, Sherwin, and Chris Cannizzaro each managed two hits in the win, while Broughton picked up his first RBI since March 24 at Pittsburgh.
Game Two: Navy 6, Bucknell 5
The Bison carred a 5-4 lead heading into the eighth, but two runs from the Mids in the bottom of the inning helped Navy earn a split on the day.
Bucknell once again took a 1-0 lead, with Broughton again playing a part, singling through the left side to score Jacob Terwilliger in the second inning. Navy responded with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at one.
The Bison added three more runs in the fourth. Sherwin and Cannizzaro reached on a fielder's choice and a single, before the bases were cleared with a three-run home run by first year Jacob Corson, the first of his career. Corson's homer over the right field fence gave Bucknell a 4-1 lead after four.
After a Navy run in the bottom of the fourth, Bucknell added its final run on a double by Broughton, who had an excellent day at the office with four hits, a career high. The double brought home Terwilliger once again, who singled to the shortstop earlier in the inning as Bucknell took a 5-2 lead.
The Mids however added two runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull within one, before taking the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single and a sac fly to pull ahead.
Broughton finished 4-for-5 on the day with two RBIs, while Corson added three RBIs with his first career home run. Marren picked up another multi-hit game, while Terwilliger added a hit and two runs scored.
Bucknell will take on the Mids in the series finale on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Depew Field. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
