Bison Women’s Soccer Falls to Navy 1-0 on Early Goal
3/31/2021 8:33:00 PM | Women's Soccer
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Chloe Dawson headed in a service just 1:52 into the match, and Navy made the early goal hold up over the next 88 minutes in a 1-0 victory over Bucknell in Patriot League women's soccer action on Wednesday night at wet Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium.
Navy improved to 2-4 on the season, 2-1 in Patriot League play and 2-0 in the PL South Division. Bucknell fell to 1-2-2 overall and 1-2-1 in the PL South.
Bucknell entered the game having allowed just one goal all season, but Navy got on the board in this one just after the opening whistle. Kristina Dzhandzhapanyan found space down the right channel for a quick shot, that was saved by Kaylee Donnelly but out for a corner kick. The Mids took a short corner, and Victoria Tran's service was headed toward goal by Dawson. Donnelly reached back to get a mitt on it, but the assistant referee ruled that the ball crossed the line and the goal was awarded.
The Bison settled in after conceding the early tally, pieced together some nice build-up play and outshot Navy 7-1 over the remainder of the half.
The field tilted in Navy's direction in the early part of the second half, and the Bison came up with some big defensive plays to keep it a one-goal margin. Just four minutes into the half, Alex Catanzarite came up with a key blocked shot when a free kick service deep into the box fell right to the feet of Tran in a dangerous position.
Later in the half Alana Carlucci broke up a play to the left of goal when it appeared a Navy forward had space, and then on the ensuing corner kick Jenna Hall made a nice save at the near post on a drive by Emily Keast.
The Bison pushed numbers forward in the late stages of regulation as they sought the equalizer. Emilene Parham had a close-range shot blocked aside for a corner kick, and then Jenna Marek attempt went over the bar.
Bucknell earned a corner kick in the final 30 seconds and even brought goalkeeper Hall into the box, but the Bison could not convert.
Bucknell finished with a 12-9 shot advantage, while Navy led 7-3 in corners. Mattie Gallagher tallied three saves for the Mids, while Donnelly (1) and Hall (2) combined for three for the Bison.
