Men's Soccer Suffers 1-0 Setback to Navy on Saturday Afternoon

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Navy's David Jackson converted a penalty kick at the 32nd minute mark, and the Mids held on for a 1-0 win in Patriot League Divisional play on Saturday afternoon at the Glenn Warner Soccer Complex.
Bucknell (1-3,1-3) was held without a goal for the second time this season, despite managing three shots on target and eight corner kicks. The win for Navy avenges a 2-0 loss at the hands of the Bison in the Patriot League Quarterfinals in 2019.
Bucknell started the game brightly, as first year forward Sebastian Paz rose highest on a corner kick just six minutes into the game by Jameson Railey. Paz, who had a goal ruled offside against American two weeks ago, couldn't direct his header on frame.
Colin Eifert added a shot on target, as the center back managed a deflected effort on a free kick from about 30 yards out. The deflection off the Navy wall took off a lot of the speed of the shot, as the ball fell into the hands of Navy goalkeeper Ian Bramblett.
The turning point of the contest came when Navy's Baba Kallie was ruled to have been brought down in the box, awarding a penalty kick to the Mids in the 32nd minute. Navy first year David Jackson slotted the ball into the left corner as Navy took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
Bennett Schwartz did his best to keep the Bison in the game, as the Mids nearly doubled their lead just before the end of the first half as Navy's Jacob Williams got on the end of a driven ball into the box. Schwartz made a leaping save to his right while colliding with the post to deny Williams and keep the Bison within one.
The Mids threatened again when Wyatt Millard latched onto a powerful shot near the top of the box that rattled the Bucknell crossbar three minutes into the second half.
Schwartz came up with another big save in the 63rd minute, denying Kallie from a goal with a kick save as the speedy Navy forward latched onto a long pass on the left side.
Cody Wax nearly won a penalty himself as the senior, who had a terrific day, won the ball in the Bucknell half on a Navy corner kick, before making a lung-busting run on the counter all the way to the top of the Navy box. First year forward Collin Murphy played a nice return pass to put Wax in on goal, but the foul was judged to be just outside of the box.
Thorsheim hit the wall on the ensuing free kick, before lashing the follow-up half volley just wide of the frame.
Trevor Wiggins, who went into the game having scored in back-to-back appearances, won yet another header on a Matt Thorsehim free kick with five minutes left to force one last save from Bramblett, but the Mids held on for a 1-0 win.
The two teams were even in shots on goal with three apiece, while the Bison managed eight corner kicks on the day.
Bucknell will return home for a match against Colgate on Saturday, April 3.
