Late Goal Sends Loyola Past Bucknell Women’s Soccer, 1-0
3/13/2021 9:20:00 PM | Women's Soccer
BALTIMORE, Md. – Ada Clare Tempert finished a breakaway in the 73rd minute to lift Loyola past Bucknell by a 1-0 margin on Saturday night at Ridley Sports Complex. The Bison, who played Lafayette to a scoreless draw last week, fell to 0-1-1 on the season, while the Greyhounds improved to 2-0.
Bucknell had been controlling play for much of the second half but could not find a go-ahead goal. The best chance came 53rd minute, when Jenna Marek bent a beautiful service to the top of the six-yard box, where Rylee Donaldson barely missed getting a touch on it.
Ten minutes later the Bison earned a couple of corner kicks, and Holly Burns' header from one of them didn't miss the top left corner by much.
With just over 17 minutes to play, Loyola found the breakthrough when Vanessa Alessi played in Tempert, who got to the ball just before onrushing goalkeeper Jenna Hall and toe poked it past her. It was the second goal in as many games for Tempert, this week's Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week, who also scored in the Greyhounds' season-opening win over Colgate.
It was also Loyola's first goal against Bucknell since 2014. The Bison had posted five straight clean sheets against Loyola, and the Tempert goal ended the Greyhounds' scoreless drought against Bucknell at 568 minutes. Bucknell had been unbeaten in its last eight games (6-0-2) against Loyola.
Loyola finished with a 14-10 edge in shots, while the Bison had a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Bison split the goalkeeper duties for the second week in a row. Kaylee Donnelly started and made two saves, and then Hall stopped three shots in the second half.
Bucknell is slated to play its first home game of the year next Sunday against Lehigh at 1 p.m.
