School Record Falls in the 200 Freestyle Relay
LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women's swimming & diving team is slotted second through the Bucknell Invitational's first day, which wrapped up on Friday night at Kinney Natatorium.
The highlight of the Bison's complete team performance was a record-breaking swim in the 200 freestyle relay. Maddie Hartigan, Alexandra Ritorto, Alexis Faria and Sophia Donati teamed to touch the wall in 1:33.16, .20 of a second faster than the previous standard set at the 2018 Patriot League Championships.
Hartigan nearly broke her own school record in the 500 freestyle en route to her individual title; her time of 4:47.65 would have stood second in the Bucknell annals if she hadn't already swam the program's fastest time (4:46.48) at the 2020 Patriot League Championships. She swam the lead-off leg of the 200 freestyle relay in 23.41, slotting her fifth in school history in the 50 freestyle.
Hartigan was one of three Bison to compete in the 'A' finals in an individual event. Abby Doss went fourth in the 200 IM behind Bucknell's sixth-fastest time (2:02.63) while Sabrina Vumbacco took sixth in the 500 freestyle.
The Bison secured second- and eighth-place showings in the 200 freestyle relay and a third-place performance in the 400 medley relay. The 400 medley relay team of Esme Hunter, Doss, Alexis Faria and Hartigan clocked Bucknell's ninth-fastest time (3:45.46).
With 352.5 points, the Bison stand behind only Towson (464.5) in the seven-team field. The Bucknell Invitational continues tomorrow, with preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m.
