Clarke’s PK Sends Men’s Soccer Past Colgate, 1-0

HAMILTON, N.Y. – A wild final 12 minutes saw senior captain Alex Clarke finish from the penalty spot to send nine-man Bucknell to a 1-0 victory over 10-man Colgate in Patriot League men's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Beyer-Small '76 Field.
The victory upped Bucknell's season record to 4-6-2 and its Patriot League ledger at 2-2-1, while Colgate remained winless at 0-12-0 overall and 0-5-0 in league play.
The two teams were mired in a scoreless deadlock in the 79th minute, when a long throw-in from Colin Eifert ignited a game-changing set of events in the Colgate penalty area. The Raiders seemed to have cleared the ball away with two players down in the box, but a scrum ensued right in front of the goal, halting the action for several minutes.
When the dust settled, Bucknell striker Jordan Miller was shown a straight red card, and yellow cards were given to Colgate's Simon Hall and Adam Fam. It was the second yellow for Hall, resulting in his sending off. Because Colgate's involvement occurred inside the box, a penalty kick was awarded to Bucknell, and Clarke fired his spot kick into the top left corner past the outstretched arms of Nick Gerlach.
Colgate nearly equalized in the 82nd minute, but Toby Goldner's shot from tight quarters in front of goal struck the right post and fell into the arms of Bison keeper Bennett Schwartz.
The Bison did well to see the game out from there, however in the 89th minute Clarke won a header along the right sideline, and as right back MJ Kuczura sprinted forward to retrieve the loose ball, he collided with Colgate's Dominic Galietta. Kuczura was then shown a red card, leaving the Bison with nine men for the final 1:29.
"There never has been and never will be an easy Patriot League game, no matter what anyone's record is," said head coach Matt Brown. "It seems like every game is decided by a goal either way, and fortunately we came out with the right result today. Our defense was massive today. We really limited their attempts on goals, and that solid foundation in the back gave us the opportunity to win. I was very pleased with the back four today; MJ Kuczura, Matthew Owusu, Gabe Dahlin and Zach Hurchalla were great, and Bennett Schwartz earned another shutout. I'm also very happy for Alex Clarke, who took his moment and finished with quality."
Bucknell outshot Colgate 7-6 in the match, with Schwartz credited with four saves en route to his third shutout of the season.
With seven points on the season, Bucknell moved into a tie for fifth in the Patriot League table.
The Bison now have a short turnaround before hosting Syracuse on Monday at 7 p.m. at Emmitt Field.
