Men’s Soccer Downed by Syracuse, 4-0

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Syracuse scored twice in each half to turn back the Bucknell men's soccer team 4-0 on Monday night at Emmitt Field. The Bison held the Orange to 13 total shots, but the visitors cashed in on four of them, with the last coming on a penalty kick with 20 seconds to play.
Syracuse improved to 7-5-2 on the season, including a 5-2-1 mark outside the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Bison fell to 4-7-2, with three of the losses coming to ACC sides. They opened the season with back-to-back setbacks at North Carolina and Wake Forest.
Both teams substituted liberally in this non-league match, with Syracuse using eight players off the bench and Bucknell seven. The Bison were already playing without four regular starters due to injury, rest or red-card suspension.
The Bucknell defense held up for the most part against a dangerous Syracuse attack that now has 33 goals in 14 games this season. But the Orange grabbed an early goal and then three more that resulted from crosses from the byline.
"I was proud of our performance tonight," said interim head coach Matt Brown. "The lads fought hard from start to finish and we saw much more good than bad, especially with a lot of young guys out there. In the end Syracuse just had a bit too much speed and athleticism, and they were able to finish their chances."
Syracuse took the lead in the 14th minute when Curt Calov snuck a ball through to Deandre Kerr, who finished inside the left post for his team-leading eighth goal of the season.
In the 38th minute, substitute Manel Busquets was on the finishing end of a beautifully worked goal. Jeorgio Kocevski played Camden Holbrook down the left flank, and Holbrook's service across the face of goal was punched in by Busquets for his fifth goal of the season.
Bennett Schwartz made two good saves to keep it a 2-0 game at the half, including one on Holbrook where he had to dive back into position on a scramble in the box.
Syracuse did find that third goal in the 67th minute. Luke Biasi kept the ball alive on the end line and set up Julius Rauch for a tap-in goal. Rauch, who had just entered the game for the first time about three minutes earlier, scored his second goal of the season.
The Bison responded with a number of bright moments in the game's final 20 minutes. Braedan Glass ripped a rising left-footed volley just over the bar in the 71st minute.
Bucknell's best chance came with 12 minutes to play, when Alex Clarke did well to play around two defenders along the right side of the area. His perfect service to the head of Patrick O'Hara seemed ticketed for the back of the net, but Orange goalkeeper Lucas Daunhauer made a terrific diving save. O'Hara had another good look on the ensuing corner kick, but his low drive skipped wide of the left post.
The Bison were unfortunate to concede a fourth in the final half-minute. Another ball served in from the byline resulted in a push from behind, and the penalty was awarded. Julio Fulcar converted from the spot with 20 seconds to play.
Syracuse finished with a 13-5 edge in shots. Schwartz finished with four saves for the Bison.
Bucknell has nothing but Patriot League matches remaining in the regular season, starting with a big one on the road on Saturday at conference co-leader Holy Cross.
