LEWISBURG, Pa. – Ethan Boyle scored six minutes into overtime, lifting American to a 2-1 victory over Bucknell in Patriot League men's soccer action on Saturday at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium. Freshman center back Gabe Dahlin scored his first career goal for the Bison, who were coming off an OT win of their own on Wednesday at Lehigh.
David Coly set up both goals for the defending Patriot League champion Eagles, who improved to 4-3-2 overall and 2-1-0 in conference play. The Bison fell to 3-6-1, 1-2-1, heading into a pair of away matches in Central New York next week.
Trailing 1-0 at the half, Bucknell had a number of bright moments in the second half and were rewarded with an equalizing goal in the 65th minute. Colin Eifert, Dahlin's center back partner, came forward for one of his long throw-ins in the attacking third. Dahlin headed the ball down in the center of the area, tracked down the loose ball and scored with a turning, left-footed shot.
A few minutes earlier, Brennan Gac just missed the top left corner with a rocket from distance, and only three minutes after the Dahlin goal, Alex Clarke got behind the defense but Dominic Dominguez came off his line to snuff out the shot attempt.
American was not without its own second-half chances, and Bucknell field players twice saved shots off the goal line. Early in the half, Coly maneuvered around Bennett Schwartz as he charged off his line, but Dahlin was there to head Coly's hard shot off the line. In the 62nd minute, Chris Masur was well-positioned on the left post to deflect Coly's close-range header up and over the bar. That proved big when Dahlin scored only two minutes later to tie the game.
The Bison put a couple of dangerous balls in the box late in regulation, but the Eagles won it in the 97th minute. Schwartz made a point-blank save on Coly at the right post, but the ball rebounded right back to Coly, who centered it to Boyle for the first-touch finish.
Coly was also the catalyst on American's first goal, coming just 6:24 into the match. After a long run down the left flank, Coly weaved through traffic into the penalty area. As two Bison defenders converged, the ball leaked back to Robert Matei, who finished from about 12 yards out.
American finished with a 13-8 shot advantage and led 9-1 in corner kicks. Dominguez made three saves before giving way to Lorenzo Gordan after taking a knock in the entanglement with Clarke. Schwartz tallied four saves for the Bison.
Bucknell heads to Binghamton for a non-league match on Tuesday night, and then the Bison head to Colgate for their next Patriot League contest on Saturday at 4 p.m.
