LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Head coach Kelly Cook has announced the addition of Katie Schiano to the Bucknell women's soccer team's 2021 recruiting class. Back in the November signing period, the program welcomed seven new additions to next year's team.Â
Schiano is a forward from New Albany, Ohio, where she attends Columbus Academy. She helped her high school team to district and regional championships in both 2019 and 2020, and in both years the squad went on to the state semifinals for the first two times in school history.Â
A team captain as a senior, Schiano was a two-time Second Team All-State selection, and she was a three-time First Team All-League and First Team All-District selection. She was a Columbus Dispatch Top Performer of the Week selection and was named to the This Week News Super 25 Team. Schiano was her team's leading scorer in each of her last three seasons, and she was also an Academic All-League honoree.Â
"Katie is a strong and powerful athlete who will add depth to our forward line," said Cook. "She is able to play both as a target or winger in our system. She has the ability to score in a variety of ways and create dangerous attacking opportunities for our team."Â
Schiano comes from a family of Bucknellians. Her parents Christy '90 and Greg '88 are both Bucknell graduates, as is her older brother Joe '19. Two other older brothers, Matt and John, play on the football team at Amherst. Greg and Joe Schiano both played football for the Bison, and her father is currently the head football coach at Rutgers. In addition, her maternal grandfather is Bucknell Athletics Hall-of-Famer Tom Mitchell '66, who is widely considered one of the finest football players in school history. He later went on to a lengthy career in the NFL, where he played in two Super Bowls with the Baltimore Colts.  Â
