SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Bucknell men's tennis improved to 2-3 on the season with a 5-2 victory over Saint Francis at the Central PA Tennis Center Sunday afternoon. All three doubles pairings won their respective matchups, and the Bison took four of six singles matches on the way to a second home win this spring.
The Bison won each of the top four singles matches, led by a 6-2, 6-0 win by Marwan Abaza in number one singles. The junior defeated Saint Francis' Derek Roehner to improve to 6-1 on the season. Following Abaza was Ryan Jurist in number four singles, who won his fourth of the season with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over sophomore Daniel Vinces.
Freshman Michael Owen claimed his sixth straight singles win on Sunday, winning 6-3, 6-2 in number two singles over Saint Francis junior Sebastian Pinos, and Cooper Bradshaw won in three sets in the number three spot.
Guillermo Torres and newcomer Sam Yildirimlar each took their opponents to three sets, but wound up falling in singles.
In doubles, Bucknell bounced back from a tough day yesterday and won all three matches. Bradshaw and Owen improved to 4-1 in number one doubles, followed by a 7-5 win by Abaza and Jurist. Torres and Per Astrom won 6-4 in their first doubles match together as well.
"It was a gutsy win today," said head coach Bruce Myers. "We didn't play our best, but we played with high energy after a long day yesterday."
Bucknell has two weeks off before returning to play on Friday, Feb. 21 to host La Salle at the Central PA Tennis Center. The Bison also host Connecticut that weekend and will play two matches on Sunday, Feb. 23 against Marist and Penn State.
