SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Bucknell men's tennis picked up its fifth win of the spring with a 5-2 victory over Saint Joseph's at the Central PA Tennis Center Saturday evening. The Bison picked up four wins in singles play and grabbed two crucial doubles wins to take the point and defeat the Hawks. With the win, the Bison improve to 5-5 this season, while Saint Joseph's fell to 4-2.
"It was a really big win against a very good Saint Joseph's team," said head coach Bruce Myers. "Getting the doubles point proved huge as always, and we were able to carry that over to start singles."
While Bucknell's top doubles tandem, Cooper Bradshaw and Michael Owen, fell in the number one spot, the next two pairs came away victorious to win the point. Marwan Abaza and Ryan Jurist won 6-4 in the two spot, and Chunyu Chen and Guillermo Torres grabbed a 6-3 win in number three doubles.
In singles, Abaza continued to shine with his 10th win in the top spot. The junior defeated Saint Joseph's Nathan Perrone in comeback fashion with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 win. Abaza's performance was followed up by a 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 win by sophomore Ryan Jurist in number four singles.
"We spent the week reviewing film from last season with Ryan, and we are starting to see what makes him reliable," said Myers
Jurist improved to 5-6 with his win.
Bucknell also won in the fifth and sixth singles spots, starting with a 7-6 (5), 6-7 (3), 6-2 win by freshman Guillermo Torres. Sam Yildirimlar, who joined the team earlier this month, won his first singles match as a Bison with a tight 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-2 win at number six.
Bucknell won't play at home again until March 29. In the meantime, the Bison are heading to California over spring break to play five matches out west. Bucknell begins its spring break tour with a match against UC Irvine on Sunday, March 8.
