SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Bucknell men's tennis team won three singles matches and took the doubles point to collect a 4-3 win over Connecticut Saturday evening. It was the third consecutive victory for the Bison, who now sit at 4-3 on the season with two matches still to play tomorrow.
Junior Marwan Abaza continued his successful spring campaign with a 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3) win over junior John Holtmann. Abaza improved to 8-1, and his win set the tone for a hard-fought night for the Bison.
"It was a gutsy win today against an inspired UConn team," said head coach Bruce Myers.
Bucknell also picked up a win in the fifth singles spot, where Guillermo Torres won 7-5, 7-5 over the Huskies' Christian Provenzano. Later, freshman Michael Owen won his eighth in a row in number two singles. Owen hasn't lost a singles match since the first match of the spring season, and that continued with a swift 6-1, 6-3 decision over Connecticut freshman Rami Scheetz.
Owen was also key in doubles play for the Bison. The freshman joined sophomore Cooper Bradshaw to win 6-4 over Scheetz and Yili Zheng to improve to 6-1 on the season. Bucknell's other doubles win came from Chunyu Chen and Torres, who won 6-2 in the number three spot.
"No time to celebrate, as we're back at it tomorrow with two big matches," said Myers.
Bucknell's busy weekend continues with a 10 a.m. match against the Marist Red Foxes. The Bison then make the trip to Penn State to take on the Nittany Lions at 6 p.m.
