ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Maddie Hartigan and Maggie Wyngowski won silver medals behind record-setting times to help the Bucknell women's swimming & diving team hold on to second place at the Patriot League Championships on Thursday at Navy's Lejeune Hall.
The Bison currently boast 191 points, 19 clear of third-place Boston University. Navy remains the team leader with 341 points.Â
Hartigan broke her own school record in the 500 freestyle, clocking an NCAA 'B' cut time of 4:46.48. She was edged by Martina Thomas, the 2019 Patriot League Rookie of the Meet who was the event's defending champion, by .21 of a second. It was Hartigan's third Patriot League medal and second silver in the 500 freestyle.
Wyngowski shattered a school record that had stood since 2014, taking nearly two seconds off Amber McDonnell's previous standard with a time of 2:00.15. Like Hartigan, she was narrowly edged for first, finishing .15 of a second behind Navy's Sydney Harrington. It was Wyngowski's third Patriot League medal and first in the 200 IM.
Beyond Hartigan, the Bison shined in the 500 freestyle. Sabrina Vumbacco finished right behind Hartigan, taking third with Bucknell's second-fastest time (4:50.18). In addition, Abby Merriman (5th) and Emily Gorham (6th) represented the Bison in the 'A' finals; Merriman's time of 4:52.09 gave her fourth in the Bucknell annals.
Hartigan also teamed with Emma Hadley, Catherine Craig and Alexis Faria for a fifth-place performance in the 400 medley relay; the quartet's time of 3:42.72 was good for second in school history.
The Bison continue their time at the Patriot League Championships tomorrow. The preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. with the finals following at 6 p.m.
