Bison Go 2-0 on First Day of Action at Bruno Classic
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 23 ranked Bucknell University women's water polo team began its season with a 16-12 win over No. 24 Marist at the Bruno Classic behind a school-record eight goals from junior Ally Furano. The Bison then followed that up with a win over Austin College, 13-8, in the nightcap.
Bucknell (2-0, 0-0 CWPA) begins its season with a win for the third straight year, and improves to 14-5 against the Red Foxes all time.
Bucknell found separation from the Red Foxes late, outscoring Marist 4-2 in the final quarter to hold on to a four-goal victory. The Bison scored four goals in each quarter in the win.
Kali Hyham scored the first goal of the young season shortly after the opening sprint on an unassisted tally. The junior found the back of the cage while playing against her sister, Marina, who was the starting goalkeeper for the Red Foxes. After falling behind twice in the first period, goals by A. Furano and Hyham helped Bucknell take a 4-3 lead before Marist's Carolyn Gauvin equalized shortly before the end of the first period.
Bucknell stretched its lead to three, 7-4, midway through the second period after Marcela Herrera found the back of the cage. However, the Red Foxes managed to cut into the Bucknell lead heading into the half down 8-7. A. Furano found Bucknell's eighth goal to stop two unanswered goals by Marist, drawing an exclusion before finishing herself shortly afterwards on the powerplay.
Marist tied the game at eight in the third quarter, but Hyham drew an ejection to set up a penalty shot by A. Furano to help give Bucknell the lead once more, 9-8. Hyham then scored herself, before a goal by Paige Furano helped the Bison start a 3-0 run that proved to be a turning point in the contest as the Bison maintained a two-goal lead, 12-10, entering the fourth.
The lead proved enough as Marist couldn't get any closer than two the rest of the way as Bucknell held on for a 16-12 win, the most goals scored by the squad since a 16-8 win over Saint Francis (Pa.) on March 30 of last year. A. Furano's eight goals break a single-game record held by five Bison including her sister Paige, and current assistant coach Hannah Sunday. Hyham chipped in five goals on the day as the two juniors combined for 13 of Bucknell's 16 goals. P. Furano added two goals and two assists, while Nina Benson posted two assists.
