LEWISBURG, Pa. – Fighting to stay alive for a fifth set, Bucknell volleyball sat tied at 19 with the Lehigh Mountain Hawks following three back-and-forth sets. The Mountain Hawks managed to outscore the Bison 6-3 down the stretch and win the match 3-1.
The Bison, who were coming off a 10-match winning streak, fell to 0-1 in the Patriot League and 11-2 overall with the loss.
Twice the Bison led by as many as three points in the final set, but lead changes were the theme throughout the match as both teams traded momentum with one another. Eight of those lead changes occurred in the first two sets, which were both won by scores of 25-21 by either team.
The Bison held a four-point lead in the first before the Mountain Hawks came storming back and ended it on a 4-0 run. The second set ended in similar fashion to the first, this time with Bucknell coming out on top.
The Bison began to fall behind in set three as Lehigh jumped out to an 18-7 lead, but an 11-5 run cut the deficit to just five and gave Bucknell a fighting chance. Lehigh's Sabrina Lancaster posted two kills to put it away and give her team a 2-1 advantage in sets.
Senior Mimi Richards took charge in the final set with seven kills on 12 total attempts, but her efforts were not enough to lift the Bison to a win.
Richards ended the night with 11 kills and a .333 hitting percentage. Just ahead of Richards was freshman Lisa Zoch, who posted 11 kills and a career-high 17 digs for her first double-double of the season.
Bridgette Holland recorded 10 kills, half of which she tallied in the second set while maintaining a .500 hitting percentage. Freshman Kelsey O'Loughlin led the team with 39 assists to go along with 13 digs. Also noteworthy was a nine-kill outing for Anna Carroll, who ended the night with a .313 percentage.
Bucknell has another opportunity tomorrow when it hosts Lafayette at 2 p.m. Bucknell defeated the Leopards twice last season. Sunday's match will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network.
