Women’s Soccer Falls to George Washington, Patriot League Play up Next

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Gabby Bair scored a wonderful goal from long distance and goalkeeper Kaylee Donnelly made 10 saves, but the Bucknell women's soccer team fell 2-1 at George Washington on Sunday afternoon in a final tuneup before the start of Patriot League play next week.
It has been a rigorous non-conference schedule for the Bison (2-6), who have played eight quality opponents over a span of four weeks, with a Thursday-Sunday or Friday-Sunday pairing each week. This time, Bucknell was coming off a hard-fought home game against defending Ivy League co-champion Penn on Friday night, while the Colonials (3-1-2) were on an extra day of rest and extended their unbeaten streak to five (3-0-2).
The Bison started six freshmen in this one, with Alivia Handson, Annabelle Heisel and Rylee Donaldson all making their first career starts. But it was the senior Bair who came on as a substitute and got the Bison on the board in response to an early George Washington goal about six minutes earlier.
Bair threw the ball in from just in front of the GW bench, received a tap back, and after a couple of touches let it fly from about 35 yards out. Her shot curled into the top right corner, past the outstretched fingertips of goalkeeper Tamaki Machi.
Megan McCormick had put George Washington on the board in the 22nd minute when she headed in a corner kick amid heavy traffic inside the six.
The Colonials answered the Bair goal within five minutes, however. Sofia Pavon tracked down a loose ball to the left of the penalty area and delivered a perfect service to Maria Pareja for a one-time volley.
The Bison were limited to one second-half shot and five total, but they were in the game right to the final whistle thanks to some tough defending of their own. In the 78th minute, Ali Russo headed a ball off the line, and moments later Donnelly made a great diving save on a point-blank header.
Donnelly recorded double-digit saves for the second time in her young career. Machi was credited with one save for the Colonials, coming on a first-half attempt from Abby Gearhart.
Bucknell kicks off Patriot League play next Saturday on the road at Lafayette at 4 p.m. The Bison will be looking to avenge a 2-0 loss to the Leopards last season, which put an end to a 16-game unbeaten streak in the series (14-0-2).
