LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Kelsey Briddell, a former standout student-athlete at the University at Albany who also has United States National Team experience, has joined the Bucknell field hockey program as an assistant coach. Briddell joins head coach Jeremy Cook and first-year assistant Heather Schnepf on the Bison staff for 2019.Â
"I am very excited that Kelsey is joining us," said Cook, who will be entering his 12th season as Bucknell's head coach. "She's outgoing, positive, hard working and will be a fantastic role model for our student-athletes. Kelsey has an academic mindset that is perfect for our environment, and she has had a variety of really high-level experiences as as a player. It will be really neat to see her impact on our frontfield."
Briddell was a 2018 summa cum laude graduate of UAlbany, where she majored in human biology with minors in neuroscience, psychology and art. She was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, the Presidential Honors Society, and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Briddell took part in the school's Emerging Student Leaders Program, and she completed a senior thesis on "Energetics Among Collegiate Cross Country Runners."
On the field, Briddell was a key midfielder for the Great Danes in all four of her seasons in Albany. She played in 84 games with 67 starts and tallied 59 career points on 15 goals and 20 assists. The assists figure ranks 10th in UAlbany history. Briddell was a unanimous America East All-Rookie Team honoree in 2014, and as a senior she was named to the America East All-Tournament Team. She was also named a Presidential Scholar-Athlete in 2018 and was named to the America East All-Academic Team in 2016.Â
At UAlbany, Briddell was part of some terrific teams, particularly the 2014 squad that finished 20-3, won the America East title, and then knocked off Wake Forest and Maryland en route to the NCAA Tournament Final Four. A year later, the Great Danes were ranked as high as fifth nationally and captured another league championship before falling 2-1 to Boston College in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. All told, UAlbany went 65-19 overall and 25-4 in league play during Brissell's four-year career. That includes a 1-1 record against Bucknell. In 2016, she logged two assists on penalty corners at Graham Field in a game that the Bison rallied to win 3-2 in overtime.Â
A native of Gansevoort, N.Y., and a graduate of Saratoga Springs High School, Briddell in May was named to the U.S. National Indoor Field Hockey Team. She has also served as a full-time training player with the USA Field Hockey Women's National Team and has played with the U.S. National Development Squad.Â
In the fall of 2018, Briddell was a player and coach with TSV Mannheim Hockey in Germany, and she also gained international experience with Marist Hockey Club of the New Zealand Premier League while studying abroad there in the spring of 2017.Â
At Saratoga Springs High School, Briddell was an all-state selection and helped her ADK Field Hockey club team win a U-16 national indoor championship.Â
