Picked to Preseason Squad for Second Consecutive Year
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Junior midfielder Matt Thorsheim has been named to the 11-man Preseason All-Patriot League Team, the league announced on Thursday morning.
Thorsheim will be making his second consecutive appearance on the Preseason squad, after earning the honor heading into his sophomore season in 2018.
The rising junior recorded a strong freshman season where he was named Third Team All-Patriot League, United Soccer Coaches Third Team All-Northeast Region, and a College Soccer News Third Team Freshman All-America selection.
The native of Manalapan, N.J. followed his freshman season up with a Second Team All-Patriot League selection as a sophomore. Thorsheim found the back of the net twice and added an assist to finish second on the team in points. He became the fourth Bucknell player since 2015 to repeat as an All- Patriot League selection, joining current teammate Nick King (16, 17), older brother Chris Thorsheim (14, 15) and Zack Rockmore (15, 16). Thorsheim was also named to the Patriot League All-Academic Team in 2018.
One of Thorsheim's best moments in 2018 came when he scored the game-winning goal against Holy Cross in Lewisburg in the 108th minute in double overtime. He also assisted the game-winning goal against Lafayette in a 1-0 win.
In addition to the All-League Team, the Patriot League announced its preseason poll, with the Bison picked to finish eighth with 56 points. Loyola Maryland claimed the top spot on 156 points after earning the regular season title in 2018, nine points ahead of second-place and 2018 Patriot League Tournament champion Colgate with 147. The Greyhounds earned 12 first-place votes to Colgate's 8. Lehigh (128) was picked third, followed by Army (108) Boston University (101), Navy (83), American (63), Bucknell (56), Holy Cross (32), and Lafayette (26).
Loyola Maryland claimed two of the three major awards in the preseason, with Brian Saramago earning Offensive Player of the Year honors and Barry Sharifi tabbed as the Preseason Midfielder of the Year. Army's Zac McGraw was named the Preseason Defender of the Year.
The Bison will return 19 players from the 2018 squad that started the Patriot League campaign unbeaten through four games before finishing 6-8-3 overall. 13 of the 19 returning players saw action in at least 10 games.
The Bison will play two scrimmages, the first coming against UMBC at home on Aug. 20 before traveling to Howard on Aug. 24. Bucknell will open the 2019 campaign with four out of its first five at home beginning with the season opener vs. Fairleigh Dickinson on Aug. 30 at 7 p.m.
