LEWISBURG, Pa. – Two Bucknell seniors – goalkeeper Olivia Harris and forward Brittany Willwerth – were named to the Preseason All-Patriot League Field Hockey Team on Tuesday. Harris and Willwerth were both All-Patriot League honorees following the 2018 season while leading the Bison to a 4-2 Patriot League record and a 10-8 overall mark against difficult competition.
The Bison were picked fourth in the Patriot League Preseason Poll with a total of 44 points. Boston University was selected as the preseason favorite with 70 points, followed by American (64), Lafayette (50), Bucknell, Lehigh (30), Holy Cross (22) and Colgate (14). The top four teams qualify for the Patriot League Tournament.
Harris, a native of Chappaqua, N.Y., was a First Team All-Patriot League and Second Team All-Mideast Region goalie last season. She started all 18 games for the Bison and led the league with three shutouts while also ranking second in save percentage (.735) and third in goals-against average (1.68). She was a two-time Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week and was also a member of the NFCHA Division I National Academic Squad.
At the other end of the field, Willwerth has made a name for herself as one of the league's top point-producers. Like Harris, Willwerth was both a First Team All-Patriot League and Second Team All-Region selection a year ago. The New Holland, Pa., native was a Second Team All-PL pick in both 2016 and 2017, and she will be trying to become a rare four-time all-star this fall. Willwerth has recorded 54 career points on 19 goals and 16 assists. A team-high 22 pf those points came last season, when she produced seven goals and eight assists while picking up two Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week honors.
The Bison field hockey team reports to campus for preseason practice later this week. The team will host a pair of scrimmage games against East Stroudsburg on Aug. 21 and Kent State on Aug. 24 before opening the season at home against James Madison on Aug. 30 at 4 p.m.
