Byrne, Cummings, Bison Swim & Dive Earn Academic Honors From CSCAA

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell's Julie Byrne and Chadd Cummings were recognized by the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America as Honorable Mention Scholar All-Americans.
In addition, the Bison women's and men's squads were named CSCAA Scholar All-America Teams for their performance in the classroom during the 2019 spring semester. The women posted a cumulative grade point average of 3.36 while the men recorded a 3.25 mark. Earlier, the programs combined to place 38 student-athletes on the Patriot League Academic Roll and 23 on the Bucknell Dean's List.
Byrne, an early childhood education major, graduated as a three-time CSCAA Honorable Mention Scholar All-American; she was previously honored in 2017 and 2018. Cummings, an accounting & financial management major, received his first CSCAA Scholar All-America laurels in 2019 to cap a standout career.
Byrne, a 2019 All-Patriot League First Team and Academic Team selection, excelled at her final Patriot League Championships. She totaled 47 points, good for eighth among all swimmers, by capturing a silver medal in the 200 backstroke, winning a bronze medal in the 200 IM and taking fifth in the 100 backstroke. During the 200 backstroke preliminaries, she clocked an NCAA 'B' cut time of 1:57.11, the second fastest in school history. She was also a member of the third-place 400 medley relay and sixth-place 200 freestyle relay teams.
Byrne scored 125 points in her career at the Patriot League Championships, competing there all four years. Also a 2017 All-Patriot League Second Team selection, she graduated with Bucknell's second-fastest 200 backstroke mark and fourth-fastest 100 backstroke (54.76) and 200 IM (2:02.27) times. Over the course of her career, she won 22 individual events, including 12 as a senior. She was presented Bucknell's Margaret L. Bryan-Albert E. Humphreys Award for exhibiting exceptional versatility and displaying outstanding achievement and selfless determination to help her team succeed by contributing in a variety of ways.

He earned a silver medal in the 100 breaststroke by clocking a school-record time of 54.12; he became the first Bison to clear 55 seconds in that event. In 2019, a record 1,221 swimmers and divers were selected to the CSCAA Scholar All-America Team for achieving a GPA of at least 3.50 and competing at their respective NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA Swimming & Diving Championships. An additional 890 student-athletes were recognized on the Honorable Mention list for achieving a GPA of 3.50 and posting a "B" time standard or competing at an NCAA Regional or Zone Diving qualifier. A record 777 teams, representing 480 institutions, were honored as Scholar All-America Teams for achieving a combined GPA of 3.0 or higher for the semester.
