LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell University baseball team earned two members of the All-Patriot League Team, as announced by the league office on Wednesday afternoon. Junior outfielder Tyler Wincig earned First Team accolades, while fellow junior outfielder JohnPaul Bell was selected to the Second Team.
Wincig enjoyed a tremendous junior season at the plate for the Bison, hitting .348 with 40 hits overall. He consistently was ranked in the top five in the Patriot League in average, and is currently second in the league to fellow First Team member and Defensive Player of the Year Jacob Hurtubise from Army.
Wincig also led the league in slugging at .643, and was second in the league in on-base percentage (.500) Wincig's on-base percentage ranks in a tie for 21st in NCAA Division I. He was one of only seven players in the league with three or more triples, and one of just four players in the Patriot League with eight or more home runs.
One of Bucknell's most versatile players, Wincig has played in nearly every position defensively, as well as making an appearance as a pitcher this season. Wincig really found his groove as a hitter this season however, improving by .71 percentage points from his sophomore to his junior season.
His 28 RBIs this season nearly doubled his output from his first two seasons combined. Wincig's single-season on-base percentage of .500 ranks third in Bucknell history, and is the highest by a Bison player since 1989. He's also the first player to break into the top ten list since 1999.
The New York, N.Y. native also drew 29 walks this season, tied for tenth in Bucknell history. The junior finished his season strong, posting two or more hits in four of his last five games as Bucknell went 4-1 to close the season.
JohnPaul Bell makes an All-Conference squad for the first time in his career as a Second Team selection. He started the season on a tear, hitting .459 through the first ten games of the year with 14 RBIs, including a huge 3-for-5 effort with five RBIs as Bucknell nearly toppled powerhouse NC State in Raleigh in game three of an opening weekend series. Bell also posted five RBIs in a come-from behind win at Towson on April 9.
Bell was a regular in left and center field this season, posting a .421 on-base percentage, which ranks seventh in the Patriot League. The Downingtown, Pa. native also slugged .496, good for ninth in the league, and had a .316 average overall. Bell's average of .316 ranks eighth in the Patriot League to date. Bell's 36 RBIs led the team, and ranked tenth in the Patriot League overall.
His 36 RBIs were the most by a Bison player since Sam Clark drove in 37 runs in 2017. Bell improved from a .273 average as a freshman and a .250 average as a sophomore, as well as improving in RBIs, slugging, on-base percentage, and doubles from 2018 to 2019.
Bell and Wincig join Dominic Toso and Evan Klugerman as 2019 players who have received All-Conference recognition in their careers.
