Fiamoncini Tosses Season-Best in Javelin
PRINCETON, N.J. – Maura Fiamoncini posted a season-best in the javelin (170-9), taking second to earn All-East Honors as the Bucknell women's track & field team had a strong first day of the ECAC Championships. The Bison are 21st with eight points through the first day. Cornell (35), George Mason (28), Albany (26), Penn (26), and Iona (25) round out the top five.
"Although it was Maura's first loss in the javelin, she did get beat by a returning first team All-American and she did have a season-best mark," said head coach Kevin Donner. "Payton looked good in the steeple and just missed scoring with a one second PR. We do have some good scoring opportunities for tomorrow."
Kelechi Nwanaga from UMBC took top honors in the javelin (175-2), with Fiamoncini not far behind in second (170-9). The two were ahead of the rest of the field by nearly 17 feet. Nwanaga holds the UMBC record and placed fourth at the NCAA Championships last season as a freshman, with Fiamoncini earning a 13th place finish.
In the steeple, Payton Capes continued her excellent sophomore season, posting a personal-best time of 10:41.91 to move into third on Bucknell's all-time list in the process. She finished tenth overall in the event.
Teammate Margaret Thomson, who holds Bucknell's second-fastest time in the steeplechase (10:37.96), was 16th overall in the event (10:54.29).
Ashley Blair took 13th in the 5,000 meters (17:30.10). Kaitlin Salisbury was 13th in the long jump (18-1.5), two days after earning the win at the Army Twilight Meet.
The Bison will conclude the ECAC Championships on Sunday.
