Bucknell Baseball Rallies Past Binghamton, 6-4

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Ben Smith hit a go-ahead, two-run triple in the bottom of the sixth, and Caleb Broughton matched his career high with three runs batted in to lift the Bucknell baseball team to a 6-4 win over Binghamton on Wednesday afternoon at windswept Depew Field.
Broughton, Tyler Wincig and Dominic Toso rapped two hits apiece to lead Bucknell's 10-hit attack, and five of the team's six runs were driven in by the eighth and ninth hitters in the order. Wincig belted his team-leading fourth home run of the season in the opening inning.
The Bison trailed 4-3 and had runners at the corners with two outs in the bottom of the sixth when Smith sent a line drive to center field that kept rising and eventually eluded the outstretched glove of a leaping Shane Marshall. Smith's first career three-bagger was followed by a perfectly placed bunt single by Broughton, making it a 6-4 game.
The bullpen took over from there. Jeff Gottesman, a weekend starter getting in some Wednesday work, picked up his third win of the season after pitching a scoreless top of the sixth. Brenden Tuttle pitched two scoreless frames, and then Hunter Robichaux tallied his second save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth, bookended by a pair of strikeouts.
Jack Simpson started and went four innings, allowing two first-inning runs while striking out six with no walks. Jack Grabek was touched for a run-scoring triple and a sac fly in his lone inning of work. All told, five Bison hurlers combined for 10 strikeouts while conceding seven hits and four walks.
Binghamton took a quick 2-0 lead thanks to three straight two-out singles in the top of the first. Wincig got the Bison on the board when he launched a shot into the jet stream in right center, and the ball carried over 385-foot sign for his team-leading fourth home run of the season.
Bucknell took the lead in the second inning with a two-run rally that started with two outs and nobody on base. Freshman second baseman Brendan Lowery, making his third start of the season, got things started with a single. An error on Smith's ground ball to the shortstop kept the inning alive, and after Smith stole second without a throw, Broughton drove a single up the middle to plate two runs.
Bucknell played error-free defense behind the pitchers, and the outfielders made a number of tough catches in difficult conditions. Drizin's diving catch up against the wall in right with the wind blowing the ball away from him was the play of the day. It went for a sacrifice fly off the bat of Sean Trenholm to give the Bearcats a 4-3 lead the fifth inning, but Drizin's sensational catch prevented further damage.
Broughton also had a good day in the field. Normally Bucknell's second baseman, Broughton slid over to shortstop in this one. He handled five ground balls flawlessly and also made a nice running catch on a softly hit blooper into shallow left field to end the eighth inning.
Bucknell improved to 9-21 on the season, while Binghamton fell to 10-12. Ryan Bryggman (0-3) took the loss in relief of starter Luke Dziados.
Bucknell returns to Patriot League play this weekend with a three-game series at Lafayette. The Bison and Leopards will play a twin bill on Saturday at noon, followed by a single game on Sunday at noon.
