SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Bucknell trailed 3-0 before rallying for a 4-3 win over Boston University in a Patriot League men's tennis match Saturday at the Drumlins Country Club. The Bison improved to 12-11 overall and 5-2 in the conference with their eighth win in 10 matches.
Freshman Ryan Jurist came through with the match-clinching win, beating Max Stehling, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 on court five. He improved to 12-8 during the spring, including a 4-2 mark in Patriot League matches.
Sophomore Marwan Abaza started the run for the Bison, defeating Pete Siozios, 6-4, 6-2, on court three. Abaza upped his singles record to 9-8 with his fifth consecutive win. He is 5-1 against conference opponents.
A pair of seniors followed Abaza with victories to keep Bucknell alive. Andrei Vitiuc beat Max Hartenstein, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) on court five, while McDonald stopped Owen Lu, 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 6-3, on court two. Lu was a Second Team All-Patriot League selection as a freshman last season.
Vitiuc also had a doubles win on the day, teaming with Jurist for a 6-3 victory on court two.
Bucknell, which has all of the eight other league teams on its schedule this season, hosts Lehigh at the Central PA Tennis Center on Sunday at 4 p.m. The match could decide who gets the No. 3 seed in the Patriot League Tournament.
McDonald and Vitiuc will be honored for Senior Day prior to the match against the Mountain Hawks.
The Bison will play a non-conference match at Bloomsburg the following day.
