WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Bucknell men's tennis wrapped up the league portion of its regular season schedule with a hard-fought 4-2 loss to Lehigh on Sunday at the Central PA Tennis Center.
The loss snapped a five-match winning streak for the Bison, who fell to 12-12 overall and 5-3 in the Patriot League. The five conference wins are a program record. The Bison would be the fourth seed in the conference tournament based on league record, while Lehigh would be the third seed at 12-7 overall and 5-2 in the league.
"It was a really difficult loss against a very good Lehigh team today," Bucknell head coach Bruce Myers said. "The energy of the crowd was simply amazing for Senior Day."
Played in front of a large crowd, the match was exciting from the start as the doubles point went down to the wire. Bucknell got off to a hot start with a 6-1 victory by Andrei Vitiuc and Ryan Jurist on court two. Lehigh took the next two contests, including a 7-6 win on court three to clinch the point.
The Bison started great in singles, as well, picking up the first two points. Freshman Ethan Jacobs was the first to finish, defeating Harry Wang, 6-1, 6-4 on court one. Wang was a Second Team All-Patriot League selection last season.
Another freshman, Ryan Jurist, followed the win by Jacobs with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over George Cooper on court five. It was the fourth consecutive win for Jurist and came one day after he clinched a come-from-behind 4-3 Bucknell win over Boston University.
Both Jacobs and Jurist improved to 13-8 overall. Jacobs is 4-2 in league matches, while Jurist is 5-1.
The doubles point proved to be important as Bucknell was working on a third singles point. Marwan Abaza led 6-3, 3-6, 4-2 on court three before play was halted.
Vitiuc and McDonald were honored for Senior Day prior to the match. The pair combined for two fall tournament singles titles, two Patriot League Player of the Week awards, and four appearances on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
"It was great to honor Andrei and Max for their four years as student-athletes at Bucknell, and how the team finished up shows their level of resolve and accomplishments."
The Bison close the regular season with a match at Bloomsburg on Monday at 3:30 p.m.
