LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell University baseball team fell in two games at Depew Field on Saturday afternoon. Holy Cross took the opener 13-7 and came back to win the nightcap 6-3.
Note: The series finale scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. has been moved to a 9:30 a.m. start.
Bucknell falls to 10-26 (3-13 PL), while Holy Cross improves to 12-24 (7-5 PL).
Game One: Holy Cross 13, Bucknell 7
Holy Cross used five runs in the first and four in the fourth to pull away from Bucknell late in game one.
Holy Cross began the game promisingly, with Austin Masel reaching on a single before moving to second on a failed pickoff attempt by the Bison. The error proved costly for Bucknell, with a walk and a single giving the Crusaders an early one-run lead. Holy Cross grabbed another run in the inning on an error by the Bison on a sac bunt attempt, before a walk and two consecutive hit by pitches made the score 4-0. An RBI single rounded out the first inning scoring for the Crusaders.
After an RBI double by Andrew Selima gave Holy Cross a 6-0 lead after two, Bucknell responded with two runs in the bottom of the third. The bases were loaded for JohnPaul Bell after Jack Schuler and Jared Drizin singled, and Tyler Wincig was hit by a pitch. Bell provided a sac fly to left that allowed Schuler to score before a Dominic Toso single up the middle scored Drizin.
Holy Cross added four more runs in the fourth to take a commanding 10-2 lead.
However, Bucknell wouldn't go away quietly, plating three runs of its own in the fourth. Jared Drizin provided an RBI single, while Tyler Wincig blasted his sixth home run of the season over the center field fence to pull Bucknell within 10-5.
Holy Cross used two more runs in the fifth to pull away in the seven-inning contest and eventually take a 13-7 win.
Bucknell pulled within 12-7 in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI groundout from Bell and a sac fly from Toso, but could not muster any more offense as it fell in the series opener.
Drizin posted a strong day, finishing 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Toso was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Wincig also provided two RBIs on his home run.
Game Two: Holy Cross 6, Bucknell 3.
The Crusaders broke open a 3-3 deadlock with two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth as Jack Grabek posted eight or more strikeouts in his second consecutive outing. Holy Cross scored six unanswered runs to come-from-behind after Bucknell took a 3-0 lead in the second inning.
The Bison did their damage early, plating three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Bucknell scored two runs on two pitches after Bell doubled down the right field line before Toso plated Bell with a double of his own on the very next pitch. Evan Madigan then provided his own stinging strike down the right field line for an RBI triple that scored Toso, before Ben Smith once again struck the paint on the right field line with an RBI double that plated Madigan and gave Bucknell a 3-0 lead.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Holy Cross plated three runs in the top of the third inning on an RBI double by Ben Malgeri, a ground out by Masel, and an RBI single by Chris Rinaldi.
From that point onward, the game remained locked in a pitcher's duel as starters Grabek and Declan Cronin for the Crusaders scattered just three hits between them until the top of the seventh when Holy Cross finally broke through.
A sac bunt brought home a runner from third for Holy Cross's first run of the inning, before Rinaldi was at it again with an RBI triple that scored Malgeri.
Bucknell's best chance to tie came in the bottom of the seventh, when a double from Brendan Lowery, a walk from Marc Chernin, and a walk from Tyler Wincig helped load the bases with two outs, but the Bison couldn't bring any across as Holy Cross held on in the inning.
Holy Cross added an insurance run on a fielder's choice, and eventually took a 6-3 win to secure the season series against the Bison.
Toso was 2-for-3 on the day with an RBI, while Madigan was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Lowery also posted his first career multi-hit game and his first career double in the loss. Grabek (1-5) was charged with the loss.
The Bison will play the series finale on the Patriot League Network at approximately 9:35 a.m. on Sunday morning.
