Baseball Drops Series Finale to Holy Cross, 6-3

LEWISBURG, Pa. – David Kale and Alex Gionis hit two-run doubles in a decisive four-run eighth inning, lifting Holy Cross to a 6-3 victory over Bucknell on Sunday morning at Depew Field. Brendan Lowery hit a game-tying, two-run double of his own one inning earlier, but the Crusaders answered in their next at-bat to sweep the three-game series.
The start of the game was moved up to 9:30 a.m. to beat the forecast of rain, and both starting pitchers were on point. Jeff Gottesman allowed two runs on six hits while striking out six over seven innings for the Bison. Holy Cross' Liam Dvorak took a shutout into the seventh inning but had to settle for a no-decision after Lowery cracked a booming double off the left-field wall to score Marc Chernan and Evan Madigan and tie the game at 2-2.
But Holy Cross touched up reliever Brenden Tuttle for four runs in the top of the eighth. The first two batters in the inning walked, and both came around to score on Kale's double. Two batters later, Gionis plated two runs with a double of his own to give the Crusaders a 6-2 lead.
The Bison got a run back in the eighth when Bell doubled and later scored on a balk.
Andrew Funovits escaped a bases-loaded-no-outs jam in the top of the ninth, boosted by a successful appeal at third base to take a sacrifice fly off the board. But with heavy rain falling in the bottom of the ninth, Noah Luckenbaugh retired the Bison in order to collect his first save.
Bell and Chernin collected two hits apiece for the Bison. Chernin doubled twice and also had a strong game behind the plate, throwing out a runner attempting to steal to end the sixth inning.
Bucknell tallied seven hits in the game, but also had five lineouts right at infielders.
Holy Cross improved to 13-24 overall and 8-5 in the Patriot League, while the Bison fell to 10-27, 3-14.
Bucknell returns to action on Wednesday against Navy at 3:30 p.m. at Depew Field.
