VESTAL, N.Y. – Bucknell's Zach Hartman placed second in the 157-pound weight class at his first EIWA Championships, which wrapped up on Saturday at Binghamton's Events Center.
Hartman became the Bison's eighth EIWA runner-up, joining David Marble (2008, 133), Andy Rendos (2009, 165), Kevin LeValley (2010, 149), Joe Stolfi (2015 & 2016, 285), Paul Petrov (2016, 125), Tom Sleigh (2017, 197) and Tyler Smith (2018, 141). Hartman is the first Bison to finish as an EIWA runner-up as a freshman.
Hartman advanced to the EIWA finals with a 4-0 decision over fifth-seeded Lucas Weiland (Army West Point), his third-consecutive shutout at the championships. He opened the scoring with six seconds left on the clock in the second period, tying Weiland up for a takedown. He then added a reversal halfway through the final frame and rode out Weiland the rest of the way.Congrats to Zach Hartman, your #EIWA2019 runner-up at 157 pounds!

In the championship bout, Hartman fell to fellow freshman Josh Humphreys (Lehigh) by a 12-6 decision. Humphreys, the second seed and Intermat's 11th-ranked wrestler, raced out to an 8-2 lead in the first period on two takedowns and a four-point near fall. While Hartman scored a takedown early in the third period to cut his deficit to 10-6, Humphreys tacked on a reversal with 45 seconds left to seal his win.
Drew Phipps joined Hartman on the 2019 EIWA podium, placing sixth in the 197-pound weight class. Phipps, who took eighth at 184 pounds a year ago, lost three bouts by decision on the second day of the EIWA Championships to finish in that spot. His semifinal opponent, second-seeded Ben Honis (Cornell), was ranked seventh in the most recent Intermat poll. Honis went on to place second, falling only to Intermat's third-ranked grappler in Patrick Brucki (Princeton).
Phipps's winning streak, which began on Jan. 11, was halted at 14 bouts. That streak was the longest recorded by a Bison this season. Over its course, Phipps registered bonus points in six bouts, with two technical falls and four major decisions.Congrats to Drew Phipps, now a two-time #EIWA placewinner!
