PITTSBURGH – Bucknell's Zach Hartman and Drew Phipps advanced to the second day of the NCAA Wrestling Championships on Thursday at PPG Paints Arena.
After dropping their opening bouts by tight decisions, the Bison duo stayed alive by winning their first consolation matchups. Hartman (157) came from behind to top Brown's Christian LaBrie in dramatic fashion while Phipps (197) was an emphatic victor over Army West Point's Rocco Caywood, the 12th seed.
Hartman trailed LaBrie, a senior competing at his first NCAA Championships, by an 8-6 margin with less than a minute remaining in the third period. While Hartman scored a reversal with 35 seconds on the clock, he needed to post back points as LaBrie had locked up the riding point. The Bucknell freshman furiously worked to turn LaBrie, ultimately doing so with five seconds remaining. Awarded four back points, he advanced behind a 12-9 decision.Â
Phipps dispatched Caywood by a 7-0 decision. Ahead 1-0 entering the third period thanks to a two-second escape in the middle stanza, Phipps registered a takedown and four back points in the final three seconds to widen the margin between them. It was Phipps's third victory over Caywood this season; he topped the Black Knight senior, who was ranked in Intermat's top 10 both times, by a 7-3 decision in dual action and by a 3-1 decision to advance to the EIWA semifinals.
Tomorrow, Hartman will face Army West Point's Lucas Weiland, the 20th seed, while Phipps will take on Iowa State's Willie Miklus, the sixth seed, in the consolation bracket's second round. Hartman previously topped Weiland twice this year: by an 8-0 major decision in dual action and by a 4-0 decision to reach the EIWA finals.
Phipps faced a tough test in the NCAA's opening round, drawing fifth-seeded Jacob Warner of Iowa. Warner was in control for the majority of their bout, building an 8-2 lead and 3:29 riding advantage through two periods. But Phipps nearly stunned the Hawkeye, scoring a takedown with 11 seconds remaining in regulation and adding four back points. Warner ultimately prevailed on the strength of his riding time point, 9-8.
In his first-round matchup, Hartman was topped by Purdue's Griffin Parriott by a 7-4 decision. Trailing 5-2 entering the final frame, Hartman scored a late reversal to trim Parriott's lead to 5-4; with Parriott having secured the riding time point, Hartman scrambled to score another takedown but ultimately ceded a last-second escape.
