PITTSBURGH – Bucknell's Zach Hartman and Drew Phipps wrapped up their time at the NCAA Wrestling Championships on Friday afternoon at PPG Paints Arena.
Hartman advanced to the third round in the 157-pound consolation bracket, scoring a last-second takedown to edge Army West Point's Lucas Weiland by a 6-5 decision. The Bison freshman ultimately fell to Oklahoma's Justin Thomas by an 11-8 decision to wrap up his time at collegiate wrestling's premier event with a 2-2 record.
Phipps's opponent in the 197-pound consolation bracket's second round was Iowa State's Willie Miklus, the sixth seed and a three-time All-American. Phipps opened the scoring with a quick takedown and led 4-2 at the end of the opening frame; the Cyclone standout ultimately took control of the bout and advanced behind a 17-4 major decision.
Against Weiland, Hartman netted four points in the final 10 seconds on a penalty, escape and takedown. His rally against Thomas came up just short; trailing 8-3 with less than 45 seconds remaining, Hartman picked up a penalty point and two takedowns. Thomas, who Hartman cut loose twice during that sequence, had already locked up the riding time point, which brought the final score to 11-8.
Hartman gained a reputation for heart-stopping, comeback victories at his first NCAA Championships. Before he stunned Weiland as time expired, he knocked off Brown's Christian LaBrie, 12-9, on Thursday night by scoring four back points at the buzzer. .
Hartman wrapped up his sensational freshman year with a 28-9 (14-4 dual) record. The first Bison freshman to finish as an EIWA runner-up, he also paced the team with nine pins.
Phipps enjoyed a strong campaign, finishing with a 25-12 (15-3 dual) mark. The junior, who set career highs in overall and dual wins, led Bucknell with seven major decisions and strung together a team-long 14-bout winning streak. He will enter his senior campaign with 60 career victories.
