KISSIMMEE, Fla.-- The Bucknell University baseball team split a doubleheader against Toledo on Saturday to run its record to 4-7 on the season. The Bison held on to a late lead in game one 8-7, before the Rockets jumped out to an early lead in game two and never looked back to win, 15-6.
Â
Game One:Â Bucknell 8, Toledo 7
The Bison staved off a late rally by the Rockets with four innings of one-hit relief by Nate Grisius, and a one inning save by Brenden Tuttle to take game one by an 8-7 score.
Bucknell took a 2-0 lead in the second inning after Miles Moore plated Chris Cannizzaro and Ben Smith on a double to center field.Â
Toledo responded in the third inning with two runs of its own to tie the game at two in the top of the third.Â
Bucknell then added three runs in the bottom of the third after back-to-back singles by Luke Hartman and Tyler Wincig opened the inning. JohnPaul Bell then stepped up with one out and scored Hartman on an RBI single, before Wincig scored on the next play on a dropped third strike from third. Cannizzaro then rounded out the scoring for the inning with an RBI single to right field that plated Bell from third and gave Bucknell a 5-2 lead after four.Â
The Bison added two important insurance runs in the fourth after Evan Madigan scored on a passed ball before Tyler Wincig scored Caleb Broughton on a sac fly to right field.Â
Toledo made a push in the top of the fifth, scoring three runs before Nate Grisius came in in an important spot with the bases loaded and no outs and the Bison clinging to a 7-5 lead.Â
After Grisius hit the first batter he faced to score one run, he escaped the jam after forcing a fly out to center field and inducing a
6-4-3 double play to end the inning.Â
Grisius continued his strong performance for four innings, although the Rockets did manage a single unearned run in the eighth inning after capitalizing on an error by the Bison.Â
Bucknell responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the eighth after PJ Strahm singled to shortstop that allowed Broughton to score from third base. Â
The run proved to be crucial, as Toledo once again made a late rally with the first two batters reaching on back-to-back singles in the top of the ninth. On the next play, an error by the Bison allowed a run to score from second. However, Wincig managed to get the runner at second base trying to make his way to third to keep the tying run out of scoring position. Â
The play by Wincig proved to be huge for the Bison as the next batter for the Rockets singled through the right side to give Toledo runners on first and second with one out. However, closer Brenden Tuttle settled in for the next two batters with a strikeout and a fielder's choice to end the game and earn his first save of the year.  Â
Bell, the reigning Patriot League Player of the Week, continued his fine run of form with a 3-for-4 day at the plate with an RBI. Cannizzaro, Hartman, and Broughton each posted multi-hit days as the Bison managed 13 hits in total. Moore also added two RBIs. Grisius (1-0) earned the win, while Tuttle earned his first save of 2019. Â
Â
Game Two: Bucknell 6, Toledo 15
The Rockets managed runs in each of the first six innings as they took a 15-6 win in game two.Â
Toledo scored six unanswered runs to start the game before Bucknell managed to get on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single from Chris Cannizzaro that plated Strahm, who pinch ran for JohnPaul Bell.Â
However, the Rockets added three more runs in the bottom of the frame before Bucknell managed another run in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Hartman.Â
After falling behind 15-2, Bucknell added a run in the top of the seventh after Brendan Lowery scored Jack Schuler on an RBI single on his first career hit for the Orange and Blue.Â
Bucknell added three more runs in the eighth on a two-RBI single by PJ Strahm and an RBI single by Alex Bauman, but Toledo took the 15-6 win to earn a first day split against the Bison. Â
Bucknell actually out-hit the Rockets in the game, 13-11, but the Rockets benefited from two errors by Bucknell. Marc Chernin posted two hits on the day and a run scored, while Strahm added two RBIs. 11 different Bison players posted a hit in the game.Â
