Baseball Falls in Series Finale to Toledo

KISSIMMEE, Fla.—The Bucknell University baseball team dropped the series finale to Toledo on Sunday morning with a 10-1 defeat to run its record to 4-8 this season.
A close game until the eighth inning was broken open by three runs in the eighth and four runs in the ninth as Toledo pushed on late to take a 10-1 win.
In the top of the second inning, Evan Madigan reached on a fielder's choice before moving to third base on a single by PJ Strahm. A heads up play by Madigan on a steal attempt by Strahm helped the Bison garner their only run of the day.
Madigan took off for home on the steal attempt by Strahm at second and helped Bucknell gain a 1-0 lead early on.
However, the Rockets scored three runs in the bottom of the frame when Ryan Thompson singled to left center for two RBIs before an RBI double from Thoms Eitniear gave Toledo its final run of the inning.
The Bison kept things close, with Jack Simpson scattering two hits over the next four innings to keep the Bison within striking distance and a two-run deficit.
Bucknell had its best chance of the game in the top of the seventh, compiling three hits throughout the inning. However, a double play and a fielder's choice allowed the Rockets to escape unscathed.
Toledo scored three runs in the seventh on a three-run home run with two outs to take a 6-1 advantage, before adding four more runs in the eighth to take a 10-1 win.
Jack Simpson (1-2) took the loss for the Bison, allowing six hits, three earned runs, and compiling seven strikeouts.
Bucknell posted 11 hits as a team to Toledo's 10, and had four players post multi-hit games. Tyler Wincig went 3-for-5 from the plate, while PJ Strahm, Dominic Toso, and Chris Cannizzaro each collected two hits. Simpson struck out seven batters for the second consecutive outing.
Bucknell will now travel to Port Charlotte, Fla. for a game each against Saint Joseph's and Seton Hall on Tuesday to wrap up the road trip for the Bison.
