LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bucknell University baseball team staved off a sweep by Army in the series finale with a come-from-behind 7-6 win after plating four runs in the bottom of the ninth. Senior Jared Drizin drew the game-winning bases loaded walk as the Bison improve to 8-20 this season.
The Black Knights took the lead in the top of the first inning, after Jacob Hurtubise stole home on a pickoff attempt by the Bison for the game's first run.
The Bison responded in the bottom of the frame after Luke Hartman walked to begin the inning. Tyler Wincig then flew out to center, but some heads up baserunning from Hartman allowed him to reach second on the play.
The extra base proved to be critical for the Bison, as Dominic Toso singled through the right side to score Hartman from second and tie the game at one.
Army regained the lead in the top of the fourth on a single by Andre Walden to the shortstop. John McKenna scored Walden with a double down the left field line before advancing to third on the throw. An RBI groundout then provided the Black Knight's second run of the inning.
Army looked to be in control of the game in the top of the fifth, extending its lead to 5-1 in the inning on an RBI double and a single to the shortstop that scored another run. Starter Daniel Burggraff was in control for Army in the early goings, allowing just three hits through the first five innings.
Reliever Hunter Robichaux, who replaced starter Jack Grabek after 4.2 innings, provided a critical stretch to keep the Bison in the game, retiring the Army side in order in the sixth and the seventh to keep Bucknell within striking distance.
Bucknell halved the Army lead at 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh after Burggraff was replaced. Back-to-back walks and a stolen base by Drizin helped the Bison gain two runners with no outs, before a bunt by Caleb Broughton moved the runners over to second and third. A walk by Luke Hartman loaded the bases before Wincig walked a run home. Toso then used a groundout to shortstop for Bucknell's other run in the inning that scored Evan Madigan.
Army provided an insurance run in the eighth on a single to the shortstop with the bases loaded and two outs. Madigan initially looked to get the third out at first base to end the inning, but then quickly changed direction and fired a throw at home that got the second Army runner out at home to keep the Bison within three.
Brenden Tuttle started the ninth inning for the Bison, and provided a quality outing with a nine-pitch inning to retire the top of the Army lineup in order and keep Bucknell within three.
Bucknell started the comeback in the ninth with back-to-back walks by Broughton and Hartman. An RBI single by Wincig scored Broughton, before a wild pitch moved the runners a base.
Toso brought in pinch runner PJ Strahm for Bucknell's second run of the inning, before JohnPaul Bell delivered a clutch single to right field that scored Wincig and tied the game at six.
With runners on first and second and nobody out, Ben Smith provided a perfect bunt down the third base line that moved both runners into scoring position.
Army elected to intentionally walk Miles Moore to load the bases and gain an additional force out, but Drizin provided a quality at-bat to allow Bucknell to walk it off.
Drizin used a seven-pitch at-bat to draw a walk with the bases loaded that gave Bucknell the walk-off win, 7-6, and helped to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Black Knights.
Toso had a big day for Bucknell, going 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored. Hartman finished 1-for-2 with three walks, while Wincig was 1-for-4 with two RBIs.
Tuttle (1-1) earned his first career win for the Orange and Blue.
The Bison will now turn their attention to two nonconference games this week at Penn State on Tuesday and at home to Binghamton on Wednesday.
