ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Bucknell University baseball team dropped the first two games of its opening Patriot League series at Navy on Saturday afternoon.
The Bison fall to 4-12 on the season, while Navy improves to 12-7 overall.
Game One: Navy 9, Bucknell 4
A grand slam in the first inning of game one proved to be the spark as the Mids did their damage early in a seven-inning game with four runs in the first, two runs in the second, and three runs in the fourth.
The Bison took the lead in the first inning of game one after a sac fly from Marc Chernin scored Luke Hartman, who led off the game with a hit by pitch before being moved to third on a double by Tyler Wincig. Chernin then flied out to left field to provide Hartman enough room to maneuver to home and give Bucknell the lead.
However, the Mids struck back in the bottom of the first inning with a two out grand-slam to right field that was unearned start the inning and help Navy take a 4-1 lead after one.
Navy extended its lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the second on a wild pitch and an RBI double.
Bucknell clawed its way back into the game after Chernin led off the inning with a single through the right side. After an Evan Madigan walk, Ben Smith ripped a double to left center that allowed both runners to score as Bucknell reduced the Navy advantage to three.
Navy responded once again to the Bucknell scoring with three runs on a sac fly and a two-RBI single to take a 9-3 lead.
Tyler Wincig provided his second career home run in the top of the fifth, but Bucknell fell by a final of 9-4 in the first game. Wincig provided the only multi-hit game for the Bison, who tallied five hits overall.
Game Two: Navy 15, Bucknell 2
A seven-run sixth inning by Navy helped the Mids pull away from Bucknell in a 15-2 win.
Navy used a single run in the first, four in the second, and three in the third before jumping out to a 15-0 lead with the seven-run sixth, capitalizing on two Bison errors in the frame.
Bucknell pulled two runs back in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Alex Baumann before pinch hitter Jared Drizin singled through the right side to bring home Will Gannon.
Overall, Navy rapped out 15 hits on the day to Bucknell's six. Baumann finished with two hits on the day and an RBI. Caleb Broughton, Gannon, Miles
Moore, and Drizin mustered the other hits for Bucknell.
The Bison will return to action on Sunday for another doubleheader against Navy to conclude the four-game set against the Mids.
