LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Jill Auteri came out on top in three sets in the final completed match to clinch a 4-3 win over Siena for Bucknell women's tennis on Sunday. The Bison improved to 2-0 with wins on back-to-back days.
With the team score tied 3-3, and Auteri's match tied 1-1 after a 6-3 win in set one and a 6-4 loss in set two, Auteri cruised in the tiebreaker, 10-5.
"This was a great team effort. We came out swinging today, but were just a little off in doubles," Bucknell head coach Rebecca Helt said. "The team fought hard to bounce back in singles. It came down to the last match and Jill showed a lot of guts in that tiebreaker."
Cayla Koch, Mishi Papich, and Sofia Ayuso all added singles victories to improve to 2-0 during the spring. Papich finished up her match first, posting 6-2, 6-4 scores.
Following a win by Siena on court one that put the Saints up 2-1, Koch tied the match with a 6-4, 6-3 victory on court two. Ayuso then gave the Bison a 3-2 lead with her 6-4, 6-4 win on court five.
Bucknell lost the doubles point but did get a good showing by Daniela Bellini and Ayuso, who prevailed 6-3 on court two.
The Bison are 2-0 to start the season for the third consecutive year.
They will look to go 3-0 when they host Niagara on Saturday at 2 p.m., at the Central PA Tennis Center. It will be Fan Appreciation Day, which will include free pizza and prizes.
