LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell placed seven student-athletes on the All-Patriot League Swimming & Diving Teams, the league office announced Thursday afternoon.
From the women's team, Julie Byrne, Maddie Hartigan and Maggie Wyngowski made the First Team while Abigail Rosenberg was tabbed to the Second Team. On the men's side, Chadd Cummings, Charlie McFarland and Matt McGoey were recognized on the Second Team.
At the Patriot League Championships, held Feb. 20-23 at Kinney Natatorium, both teams placed third in the 10-team field. The women's squad's finish was its highest since 2015, when it was the runner-up. The teams combined for 14 medal-winning performances over the course of the event, highlighted by Hartigan's victory in the 1,650 freestyle.
Byrne, previously a 2017 All-Patriot League Second Team honoree, placed eighth among all women's swimmers with 47 points. The senior captured a silver medal in the 200 backstroke, took bronze in the 200 IM and placed fifth in the 100 backstroke. During the 200 backstroke preliminaries, she clocked in at an NCAA 'B' cut time of 1:57.11. She was also a member of the third-place 400 medley relay and sixth-place 200 freestyle relay teams.
Hartigan totaled 49 points at the Patriot League Championships, tied for sixth among all women's swimmers. Beyond becoming the fourth Bison to capture Patriot League gold in the 1,650 freestyle, the freshman was the runner-up in the 500 freestyle with a school-record time of 4:49.16 and took seventh in the 200 freestyle. She was also a member of the third-place 800 freestyle relay team, which clocked a school-record time of 7:18.40, the fourth-place 400 freestyle relay team and the sixth-place 200 freestyle relay team.
Wyngowski was tabbed to the All-Patriot League First Team for the second year in a row after tying for ninth among all women's swimmers with 45 points. Last year's Rookie of the Championship meet, she won a silver medal in the 400 IM for the second-straight season and finished fifth in both the 200 breaststroke and 200 IM. In addition, she was a member of two third-place relay teams: the 200 medley relay team, which clocked a school-record time of 1:42.39, and the 400 medley relay team.
Rosenberg, previously a 2017 All-Patriot League First Team selection, was key to Bucknell's relay success in 2019. She was a member of all three third-place relay teams: the 200 medley relay , 400 medley relay and the 800 freestyle relay teams, two of which set school records. She also was on the fourth-place 400 freestyle relay team. Individually, she took fifth in the 200 freestyle, eighth in the 100 freestyle and 12th in the 50 freestyle, totaling 30 points for the Bison; she shaved .01 of a second off her school record in the 100 freestyle during the preliminaries, timing in at 50.41.
Cummings and McFarland, both seniors, earned their first All-Patriot League nod after a record-breaking Patriot League championship meet. McGoey, a junior, was honored on the All-Patriot League Second Team for the second year in a row.
Cummings netted 29 points at the Patriot League Championships, winning a silver medal in the 100 breaststroke and placing seventh in the 200 breaststroke. He broke Bucknell standards in both events, clocking an NCAA 'B' cut time of 54.12 in the 100 breaststroke during the preliminaries. He was also a member of the third-place 200 medley relay team, which posted a school-record time of 1:29.19, and the third-place 400 medley relay team; he helped the 200 freestyle relay team take fourth with a school-record time of 1:20.82.
McFarland made Bison history, breaking a school record that stood for 31 years to win a silver medal in the 50 freestyle. The senior clocked a time of 20.10 to claim the top spot from Bucknell Athletics Hall of Famer Jim Harvey, who had held the record (20.17) since the 1988 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships. McFarland also went 12th in the 100 freestyle and 13th in the 100 breaststroke to total 26 points. Like Cummings, he was key to Bucknell's relay success; he was a member of all three third-place relay teams: the 200 medley, 400 medley and 400 freestyle teams; he also helped the 200 freestyle relay team take fourth behind a school-record time.
McGoey led all Bison men's swimmers with 37 points, good for 24th overall. He won a bronze medal in the 200 IM, took seventh in the 400 IM and placed ninth in the 200 backstroke.
